A tutor can help students be able to solve the more difficult questions and develop their skills in the subjects through doing lots of practice questions. I can also act as someone's mentor and guide them through their personal difficult hardships and mental health issues throughout high school. I am patient and able to work at the pace of the…

A tutor needs to have a good understanding of the content to help cater to the students' needs. By suggesting or providing different resources (e.g. alternative text books, handouts, video clips or study cards), the student can widen their methods of learning and access to resources. A tutor needs to be a relatable individual, who gets along…

I think the most important things I can do for a student revolve around mentorship. Being a tutor is not just about imparting information and tips to the student. It is recognising the student as a whole, looking after their mental wellbeing, and ensuring that what they're learning is being tailored to them, rather than a cookie-cut approach. A…

I think as a tutor it is important to make sure your students feel safe and supported at all times. It is also important to not belittle students but rather always encourage them no matter what. Teaching students how to eventually become independent learners is also very important. I think my strengths as a tutor are my solid foundation of the…

The best way to help a student learn to assist them in breaking down the problems they face. Whether it be breaking down the question, time management or controlling stress levels, the most important aspect of tutoring is to strengthen their fundamental skills. I have clear speech and an ability to connect with the student, aided them in their…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to have patience. Understanding that each student is different and that it's necessary to adapt to their pace in order to achieve results. I feel that I have always had a certain ease in teaching something to people when compared to most of them trying to convey knowledge. I believe it's…

I think my opinion about teaching is for different kids should have different method. For example, when you teach an introverted but smart kid you can’t just tell him what to do, you have to give him more courage and gain his trust, because the kid is wise enough and you just need to lead the right not to tell him how to do. Second. It is being…

Help them understand and not let them feel helpless. A lot of kids feel helpless when learning and it's extremely important for tutors to let them know that they aren't and teach them other ways to learn that are more helpful for them. My strengths are most definitely adapting to any situation and my patience. I understand that people may struggle…

The most important thing a tutor can do is to equip the student with the skills to find answers and explore the subject on their own. Whenever my students ask me questions outside of the syllabus, I involve them in the process of looking up papers and interpreting scientific language. I think the most important thing is to encourage a student to be independent and learning how to solve their own problems. So, by not giving them the answers outright but ensuring that they are taught key methods that enable them to solve their own issue is very important especially in the long term. Having patience and attention to explain…

In my opinion, patience is the most important. Tutor is different from a teacher because as a tutor, it allows us more time to explain, and allows students more time to ask. Only if I show patience, my students are not afraid to keep asking. I think this is the whole point of tutoring. I grow up in an asian city so I had a lot of tutoring lessons…

I think that it's really important to be a good listener so that you can use feedback from students to improve your teaching. Not everyone learns in the same way so it's really important to work with each student to find the learning tehniques that work best for them. It's also important to recognise that each student could prefer different…

Xinchi has just been over again this evening and I would like to say what a lovely young man he is. He is very thorough, knows what he is teaching, and has a lovely manner. He has already built a nice rapport with Cameron. We are keen to see Cameron's progress under Xinchi's guidance.

Inside ArdrossTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Jack worked on calculating area, length, and perimeter in measurement tasks and practiced geometric shapes and angles using diagrams.

In Year 8, Ava tackled linear equations and began exploring parabolas, followed by an investigation into geometric relationships in curves.

Meanwhile, a Year 10 student focused on applying indices rules through BIMDAS operations and completed basic data analysis for an assignment using real-life scenarios.

Recent Challenges

Homework discipline was a challenge for one Year 9 student, as noted: "didn't do homework," which meant test preparation was incomplete—impacting recall of mean, median, and range.

In Year 7, confusion about decimal conversion led to hesitation during multi-step problems; "still unsure about decimals as well as making a few silly mistakes."

For a Year 11 learner, time management issues appeared in assignment work—longer tasks were left unfinished.

Organization and equation memory also slipped in senior years: one note recorded "needs work on remembering equations," especially under test pressure, leaving key steps missing from final answers.

Recent Achievements

One Ardross tutor noticed a big shift with Jack in Year 9—after weeks of hesitating on multi-step worded problems, he now breaks them down and solves them independently, catching his own mistakes as he works.

In Year 11 maths, Kara had struggled to remember the indice laws but can now explain and apply them correctly across different problems without prompting.

Meanwhile, a younger student recently started choosing multiplication games over other activities, asking for harder times tables after initially avoiding them altogether. Last week she finished all her multiplication card challenges without needing hints.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Civic Square Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Mount Pleasant Primary School.
