The tutor should observe mainly what the student is like in order to help him/her. Since, students can be a little anxious, it's always important to be patient with them. I am very patient and will understand the needs of the student so that I can cater to their studies accordingly. I have a good understanding of concepts and can provide examples…

What is most important is to be able to cultivate self-confidence within the student when it comes to facing questions and tasks on their own; to let them believe they can face any challenge without fear or trepidation. Being able to get across difficult and abstract concepts in a way that is clear and easy to understand for the…

It is highly important for a tutor to be able to listen to where a student is struggling and use this information to be able to adapt their teachings to each student personally. It is also important for a tutor to teach good study habits to students so that they may further their studies independently. I am a highly patient person which would help…

I believe the most important things a tutor can provide are guidance, confidence, and motivation. In my experience, students achieve their best when they have tutors who not only explain content clearly but also address their struggles and guide them with patience and care through challenges. I have noticed that when students lack confidence or…

First and foremost, I would argue that the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to provide motivation and encouragement; cultivating the student's desire to learn and succeed. If this is achieved, academic success simply becomes a by-product. Secondly, a tutor must act as a resource that complements learning within a school…

I believe that the most important thing that a tutor can do for a student is to allow the student to feel free to ask questions and to query explanations. This way, it allows for me to answer their initial query as well as giving me the opportunity to proactively infer other areas that they may not completely understand. My strengths are centred…

The most important thing is to keep calm and listen to them. As a tutor you can never lose your calm irrespective of how many times your student makes the same mistake. You might have to repeat yourself hundreds of times, but that shouldn't be a problem. It is important to understand their questions and respond to them accordingly. It is also…

It's a tutor's duty to make sure that all the students are on same page at the time of lecture, involving everyone is the key requirement. First of all tutor behaviour with students. The most important thing should be that a tutor treats their student with equal respect. Just because someone's older or further ahead in life doesn't mean that they command more respect. It is one thing to help someone get the correct answer, but it is another thing to change student’s outlook. A positive and confident outlook will increase engagement, which means that the student is more likely to start having success even when the tutor is not present. This is my most important task as a tutor, because it builds independence…

Inside AshwoodTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Aveen focused on mastering long division and multiplication, as well as practicing short division to strengthen calculation skills.

For Year 8, Liam worked through challenging ratio and rates questions from his exercise book and reviewed concepts with additional practice problems.

In Year 10, Sucheta completed revision for an upcoming probability test by tackling a range of practice questions and clarifying key ideas using her notes.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student, while confident with algebra basics, often avoided writing full working for long division and negative numbers—"writing the working out!" was a frequent reminder.

In VCE maths, another student relied heavily on reference notes during SAC preparation but missed organizing all definitions and examples in one place; "just needs to ensure all definitions and example questions are written out in his reference book."

A Year 11 learner showed hesitancy starting unfamiliar questions without guidance, which slowed progress under time constraints. These moments left students double-checking mid-task or feeling unprepared when faced with new problem types.

Recent Achievements

One Ashwood tutor recently noticed a Year 11 student who used to hesitate during exams now independently applies logic and the process of elimination to tackle tough maths questions, even under timed conditions.

In a Year 8 session, a student who once skipped writing out their working has started laying out each algebra step on paper, which helps avoid earlier calculation mistakes.

Meanwhile, a younger primary student who struggled with subtracting bigger numbers last term was able to solve multi-digit subtraction problems almost entirely on her own after guided practice this week.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Ashburton Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Ashburton Primary School.
