Helping the student understand, because I always believe if they could understand the topic, they can continue to answer the rest of the questions on their own. I also believe that making the student like to study is one of the important thing of a tutor, because sometimes tutors can be too strict and make the child feel like its just another…

Things I would consider very important: Being patient, teaching the student how to problem solve instead of memorising answers, teaching the student how to be independent learners. I have a strong ability to break down complicated concepts in a way that is very easy to understand. Also, I have a magnetic personality that ensures tutoring with me…

A tutor should provide a space where students feel okay about asking questions and admitting when they're unsure. It's not just about giving answers, it's about helping students find solutions themselves. Encouraging students to see mistakes as learning opportunities is also key. Building their confidence in their own abilities is one of the most…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do for a student would be helping them build a solid foundation in their understanding of the subjects, whilst passing on some of the experiences the tutor has to the student. I believe I have many strengths I can offer as a tutor. I am very analytical and logical and I believe I will be able to…

I believe it would be to clearly identify where the student is lacking and how best to tackle that specific weakness. Then from there take it one step at a time till the student is comfortable enough to increase the pace. The key is to subtly increase the pace such that they wont notice or get overwhelmed. Given my education and occupation, I have…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student is to be understanding and patient. Being impulsive and not accomodating for the students needs will only negatively impact the student and overall his learning. Every tutor should move at a students own pace to ensure the student has understood the concepts and can master the subject. A tutor…

From my experience, the desire to learn and succeed must come from within, but once that feeling is there it is the tutor's responsibility to cultivate and grow this passion and to translate it into continuous improvement. The most important thing is to motivate to them so that they want to learn, instead of thinking that studying is just for the sake of having good results in school. This will help in the long run, as one should never stop learning. I am able to guide my students by having different ways of explaining things if they don't understand at first and to…

We are thrilled with Ross he is so knowledgeable and has a great rapport with James already. Very happy customers.
Tanya, Atwell

Inside AtwellTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Emma explored the Fibonacci sequence through an investigation and practiced number patterns using hands-on examples.

In Year 9, James worked on gradients, midpoints, and calculating the length of lines, as well as solving algebraic equations step-by-step.

For Year 10, Olivia revised trigonometric ratios and their applications in right-angled triangles, then moved on to consolidating skills with similarity problems using diagrams for support.

Recent Challenges

In Year 10 algebra, one student consistently avoided writing out working, preferring to "do it all in my head"—this led to confusion when combining x and y terms and made errors hard to spot.

For a Year 8 trigonometry task, skipping steps meant mistakes crept in unnoticed; as the tutor noted, "organising the solution better would help keep track of the thought process."

In a Year 11 statistics lesson, only revising familiar question types limited progress on new problems.

When tackling fractions in Year 7, one student's tendency to swap negative signs arose from trying to solve everything mentally instead of methodically on paper.

Recent Achievements

One Atwell tutor recently saw a big shift in Caitlin's approach: after struggling with her maths assessments, she went back and redid every problem she'd missed last time—and got them all right on her own.

With a Year 11 student, Emma, the notes show she used to mix up key points when graphing trig functions but now quickly identifies and plots each type without needing reminders.

In a lower year group, David had difficulty understanding how values affect the mean in statistics; now he explains his reasoning out loud as he solves new questions.

What they say about our tutoring

quote

Thank you for your follow up.  Ty is progressing well and we are all happy with the way things are going (mum, dad and Ty).  Apart from the normal issues, that sometimes he just 'doesn't feel like it' at the beginning of the session, he enjoys the tutoring and is gaining benefits already.  Though Ty has always had quite a good understanding of Maths, the idea of tutoring was to keep him at his best.  He was complaining of not understanding his teacher this year, so the different ways of thinking and and ways of teaching are definitely helping. I am happy with Sheetal and his dedication to his tutoring, even ringing Ty to check his progress before an assessment.  This is not something that I was expecting, but is a welcome addition as I see it helping Ty keep focused as well.

Thanks for the email. We are very happy with Lisa. She is bright and keen and has established a very easy rapport with Xiao. Xiao actually really likes her. We feel very confident that Xiao will continue to make progress with her maths.

Thanks for the email.  I am very happy with Charlie he seems to be doing a good job and Ellah has said that he is doing a good job and is really teaching her the concepts.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Success Public Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Atwell Primary School.
