As a tutor, it is your obligation to teach in a way that your pupil develops a passion for the topic he is learning. There is nothing worst than somebody who is bored while learning. Focusing on deeply understanding and on practical application is key to awaken a desire to continue learning. "If you can't explain it to a six year old, you don't…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to make him confident in the subject he is struggling with. To understand and sympathize with his problem, and to effectively guide him to success, is one of the most valuable roles of a tutor. A teacher’s role is not solely to raise a student’s grades, but rather to help the…

The most important thing would be to instill interest. To be called a succesfull tutor, one need to instill interest to their students to study during their own time, because we only meet them once or twice a week and most of the time they have to learn by themselves. My strenghs would be my perseverance and open mindedness in teaching. Each…

One of the most important things I can do for a student is to help them understand the real value of what they’re learning. I do this by connecting concepts to real-world applications, sharing examples from industry and research where even a single idea can lead to major advancements. By showing the impact and relevance of each topic, I…

A tutor should be well-prepared in ensuring students completely comprehend subject that is being taught. A tutor should be prepared to answer all sorts of question asked by the students. An excellent tutor should be genuinely interested in the students understanding. He/she should not be afraid to acknowledge anything they do not know. Instead,…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is help a student build self-confidence. From my own experience, I know that grasping a concept feels much harder when it seems 'impossible.' Confidence changes that perspective, making challenges feel doable and providing the energy needed to tackle difficult problems. I foster this through…

I think the best thing a tutor can do is make learning feel achievable. A big part of that is adapting to how each student learns, breaking things down in a way that makes sense to them, and giving them the confidence to tackle challenges on their own. Tutoring isn't just about getting through the syllabus, it's about showing students how to think…

Tutors have to be cooperative and empathetic to teach students. Moreover, they need to embody leadership qualities. It is necessary for the students to enjoy learning so that they can have a complete grasp of knowledge about a particular subject. This will allow them to achieve their desired results. It is most important for a tutor to engage with the student, so that they will be more inclined to be attentive and take the lessons seriously. It is also neccesary to make the neccesary preperations required for the student, e.g background research for foreign topics/ or remodled questions, to suit the student's needs and allow for efficient…

I am of the opinion that the most important things for tutors to do is to be patient and make the student feel comfortable. It is perfectly normal not to understand or struggle with ideas that are taught in class immediately and students should feel as though they aren't getting judged because of it. I consider patience to be the most important virtue in a tutor, setting small checkpoints between certain topics is a good strategy. A tutor should always pause and ask if the student has any questions or doubts about the concept. A tutor should make the student feel comfortable around them and they should not hesitate to ask any questions - no…

A tutor can make a student love the subject he/she hates. The most important thing for a tutor is to understand the student, his/her interests, aptitude, and what he/she is inclined towards. Efficiency in obtaining a face to face tutor.
guydobson, Balmain

Inside BalmainTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 10 Josh reviewed financial maths concepts like taxable income and revised coordinate geometry, including transformations on the number plane.

Year 9 Malissa practised writing speeches for English based on A Midsummer Night's Dream and worked through trigonometry problems using bearings.

For Year 8 Tom, recent sessions included algebraic equations revision ahead of a test and practice with area calculations for rectangles and triangles, often using diagrams to reinforce methods.

Recent Challenges

A Year 10 student was unable to specify what topics would be on her upcoming maths assessment, which limited targeted revision and left her less prepared—"in the future she really needs to know this because then we can do revision directly on the topics that she will be tested on."

In Year 9 English, another student's essay drafts lacked structure and clear topic sentences; over-description replaced use of language techniques.

Meanwhile, a Year 7 student repeatedly zoned out during maths lessons, making it harder to retain new formulas for surface area and volume.

Missed opportunities for focused practice and feedback resulted in lingering uncertainty before tests.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Balmain noticed a big shift with one Year 11 student who, after weeks of hesitation, started actively asking questions during sessions and made real progress interpreting graphs on her own.

In Year 9, another student who used to rely heavily on hints for simultaneous equations began catching and correcting mistakes without prompting, especially when working through algebra problems.

Meanwhile, a Year 5 student known for second-guessing himself surprised everyone by finishing an entire worksheet independently—only pausing to double-check his answers at the end.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Balmain Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Birchgrove Public School.
