Instilling confidence in them - especially when it comes to subjects like Math, students have kind of been programmed to think of it as a difficult subject and to fear it. Breaking those stereotypes, and making sure the correct resources are accessible for them to face the content with self-confidence can make a big difference in their lives in…

What I consider to be the most important things a tutor can do for a student is to build a relationship with them. Listening to a student, assessing what areas they struggle with most, and celebrating the accomplishments they have made in their studies (whether big or small), is key in strengthening the student's trust in the tutor. In turn, this…

In general, I aim to build confidence and self-belief in a student in order to be independently successful. I find that most students are capable of understanding and learning difficult topics but a limited belief in their abilities prevents them from performing to their best ability. Relatability is so important. We see a huge disconnect between teachers/tutors and students. I believe that an equal playing field with mutual respect creates a unique learning environment and nurtures encouragement. The student can see how the teacher got to where they are, and can realise that they, too, can learn these concepts just as those…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student is to learn with the students. In my experience, students are much more likely to engage with the lessons and motivated to excel if they feel that they are learning together with the tutor. My key strengths as a tutor are: 1. I excel at explaining complex concepts in an easy-to-understand…

The best thing a tutor can do isn’t just teaching - it’s changing how students approach learning. A good tutor encourages students to rely on their own judgment rather than memorizing answers. This means breaking down complex ideas and encouraging critical thinking. But a lot of tutors get this wrong. Instead of helping students grasp the…

The most important things as a tutor is avoid giving shortcuts to the students. If a student is struggling with a problem, I will let them think first, guide them with small things with only giving slight hints, and help them slowly reach to the answer themselves. Instead of just giving the formula or answers, I focus on helping them understand…

Whilst a tutor is only present with their student for a limited time, they can help by providing a clear understanding of what the syllabus wants and giving resources. They are also there to answer and clarify a student’s questions and assist in developing a structured work routine. Since I have recently completed the HSC and have studied the…

I believe a good tutor is making the student understand what they are learning but not how to get good result in their exam. Also I believe practice makes…

I think the best thing a tutor can do for a student is help them work towards their goals. It is very important that a tutor can prepare the students with knowledge that they require to perform their best at school. The most important role that a tutor can play in the betterment of students is to help them build self-efficacy as the "can-do" attitude solves multiple problems. The self believe helps the student gain confidence which will eventually play a role in their academic learning. The motivation of being successful in gaining mathematical skills often…

Audrey, Balmain

Inside Balmain EastTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Charlie reviewed mean, median, mode and tackled Interquartile Range, then moved on to constructing and interpreting box plots using recent test questions.

Year 9 student Emma practised solving simultaneous equations and reinforced her understanding of algebraic equations through targeted problem sets.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Ava focused on compound interest calculations and depreciation problems in maths, working through real-world scenarios for extra clarity.

Recent Challenges

A Year 9 student struggled with reading worded geometry questions fully, leading to missed key details—"she is still struggling picturing the different scenarios from the word questions," noted a tutor.

In Year 11, failure to plan and condense history notes led to either excess information or critical gaps when revising for assessments.

For Year 8 algebra, skipping steps in rearranging equations hid sign errors and slowed progress.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 student repeatedly forgot multiplication tables during fraction work, causing frustration mid-task and slowing confidence growth when tackling more complex problems.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Balmain East noticed a big shift for one Year 10 student who had previously missed key details in algebra questions; she now checks each problem more carefully and rarely skips important information.

In Year 8 maths, another student moved from confusion with multi-step percentage problems to independently solving even the longest ones without prompting.

Meanwhile, a Year 3 learner who once hesitated to read aloud tackled Level 11 and 12 books solo this week, finishing them with no help and even attempting the next level up.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Balmain Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Nicholson Street Public School.
