In the context of Science and Mathematics, the key aspect is HOW to think. Science requires imagination, innovation as well as an excellent recall and grasp of modern scientific understanding. Mathematics, being a tool - requires the students to be well-equipped with the basic mathematical tools. To directly answer this question; a tutor must…

I think it is important for the tutor to influence the student to be more enthusiastic towards his studies. It is easier to learn stuff with focus and the right attitude. The tutor has to try and make sessions interesting. Also, at the end of the day, the student must not be dependent on the tutor. As a tutor, you know you have succeeded when once…

My experience with helping my friends and classmates speaks here, that I should be patient and understanding about their situation, at the same time be scheduled and organized so the tutor and a student can be kept up to schedule with the current position of their curriculum, whist not feeling pressured to do so. The most important things that a tutor can do for a student is to be reliable, knowledgable and help the student reach and exceed their expectations. Also to be able to teach content in a way that makes learning fun and enjoyable is critical to a student's learning capacity. By forming a fond relationship with my students and motivating them, they…

First of all, which a tutor can do is to be a friend who motivates them, make them learn, make them understand without any pressure and excel them in their early stage of career. Secondly, it's all about how comfortable the students are with tutor to ask them doubts without any hesitation. Thirdly, make them learn how to do a smart work instead…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to be loving. Tutors are just not there to help students with their students. Their most important role is to be friends and be able to guide their students in the right direction. If tutors become friends, the students listen and trust them more. Of course this does not mean that students can take tutors for a ride. As a tutor I am hardworking, diligent and…

The tutor's first job is converting hard 'textbook language' to easy and illustrative concepts. Next is polishing the student's skills with extensive exercises while making sure he has time for other hobbies. It helps if the tutor is aware of things such as fun interactive quizzes or videos that helps makes concepts seem simpler while also keeping…

I believe that a tutor should be there for a student, to support and answer questions as a means of enriching their understanding. They should also be flexible to a student’s needs, such as creating plans around their current studies or providing extra materials to further their knowledge. I am flexible and adaptable, focusing on the student’s…

Teaching effectively so that the student can understand the content. It is important to make the students do their own work, rather than doing it for them as they do not learn effectively if the tutor does the work for them. The tutor must also commit to every class and treat every student equally with respect. - My strength are maths and…

Inside Breakfast PointTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Imogen worked on converting between fractions and decimals, as well as identifying factors and multiples using number patterns.

For Year 8, Amber tackled expanding algebraic brackets and moved on to factorising expressions with practice problems.

In Year 11, Hannah reviewed the measurement of economic growth along with understanding the marginal propensity to consume/save and applying the simple multiplier formula through real-world examples.

Recent Challenges

In Year 8 Mathematics, Tyler often skipped setting out his working clearly, especially when expanding brackets or solving algebraic fractions. As one tutor noted, "he worked out answers in his head instead of writing steps," leading to confusion over operation signs and missed terms.

During exam revision, he sometimes neglected assigned homework, which meant foundational skills—like inequalities and rates—were not fully reinforced.

In senior Economics (Year 12), rushing through comprehension tasks led to overlooked errors and difficulty connecting ideas between texts. This left gaps during practice exams when questions required deeper analysis under time pressure.

Recent Achievements

In Year 8 maths, Tyler used to struggle with algebraic fractions but now solves them independently and even applies those skills when tackling new exam-style questions.

Meanwhile, a senior student working on Business Studies essays moved from mainly descriptive writing to more analytical responses after targeted feedback—now she edits her work to focus on argument rather than just content.

For English, Zarraf was once hesitant to share ideas aloud but now maintains eye contact and elaborates thoughtfully during discussions, especially when prompted by the text.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Gladesville Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Patrick's Catholic Primary School.
