A tutor can provide personalised teaching to students that would not be available in a big classroom environment. A tutor also provides a safe space for students free of judgement where they can ask questions they might not get the chance to ask in class. Tutors also relate to the students and instill a level of confidence that truly improves…

The most important thing a biology tutor can do for a student is to be patient. One has to understand that every child has different ways of learning as well as the pace at which they learn. Therefore, a tutor should be perfectly fine with repeating a thing many times. A tutor should also be judgement free during the tutoring process as this makes…

Most students want to get through the next exam, but I also consider it important that knowledge and skills are reinforced and retained for years, if not for life. Because I've studied chemistry, I have a broad grasp of sciences from biology to physics and maths, and can help students link related concepts in a reinforcing manner. I've also worked…

For my students I know I can provide them with my patient and reliable nature. I believe I have quite a high tolerance, thus even if I may have to repeat certain concepts to a student I will take the time to ensure they will understand no matter what. Regarding my reliability, I pride myself on knowing that people around me can always ask for help…

The most important thing a biology tutor can do for a student is to listen to them carefully and attentively showing all engagement towards the student. This allows the tutor to understand what is difficult and what is easier for the student and at the same time displays to the student that the tutor cares and wants to better the student's life. I…

A tutor should treat every students equally. Motivate slow learners and help them improve their learning. Patience is very important and never get angry repeating the same response for those who have trouble grasping the concept. Ready to lend ears to their queries. Make learning easier so that they can enjoy learning. I have always noticed myself…

The most important thing a biology tutor can do for a student would be to assist them with their studies and be a part of their learning journey. In addition, it would be to show understanding and respect for the student and acknowledge that every student has potential but they might just need a little bit of help along the way. I think that my…

The most important thing a biology tutor can do for a student is to offer them quality information and direct feedback on their work and areas of struggle. Additionally, a tutor should be humble such that they do not impose their own ideas onto a student, but rather walk alongside the student's journey of learning. This helps to establish a strong…

The most important thing a biology tutor can give to his/her student is confidence. The confidence to know that whatever the problem is. There is no point trying to avoid it when if you work hard enough and practice enough with the right help, you will be able to solve problems on your own. Eventually the student does not need the tutor as a…

The most important thing a biology tutor can do for a student is to not spoon feed information, its the art of teaching the child to a degree where it helps them but doesnt answer the entire thing. Spoon feeding a student will only help temporarily and is very harmful. I believe my strengths are that i dont like to teach every child the same way.…

To me, one of the most important things a tutor can do for a student is to be open and encouraging. Everyone (not only kids) gets embarrassed and scared to ask questions when they don't know what to do -- its our job to make sure they feel safe enough to ask so that they can fully grasp everything in their minds. If one of my students kept…

Inside BrookwaterTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Ava practised converting mixed fractions to improper fractions and placing them accurately on a number line, then worked on expressing fractions as decimals and percentages.

In Year 10, Sam explored how changing the amplitude and frequency in trigonometric equations affects their graphs, alongside unit circle problems involving finding angles from given ratios.

For Year 11, Mia reviewed logarithms—focusing on switching between exponentials and logarithmic forms—and used rules of logarithms to simplify expressions and solve equations.

Recent Challenges

A Year 11 Chemistry student did not adjust their results table to include a missing data set, so trends in the analysis remained unclear—"analysis and discussion doesn't really relate to the research question," as one tutor noted.

In Year 10 Maths, over-reliance on familiar types of trig questions meant negative angles were left unpracticed, causing confusion when tackling new problems.

Meanwhile, a Year 8 student went over word limits in English assignments and needed to "be more concise" to avoid deleting work at the last minute.

A younger student sometimes skipped assigned times tables homework, leaving gaps for next lesson's practice.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Brookwater noticed a Year 11 student who previously hesitated to ask for help now actively seeks clarification when stuck on trigonometric ratios, making sessions much more interactive.

Another high schooler recently managed to independently outline their response plan for a complex math assignment—something they'd needed step-by-step guidance with just weeks before.

In a Year 5 session, a student who struggled to finish sums without prompting was able to answer all the time word problems on her own and checked her work aloud before moving on.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Redbank Plains Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Augustine's College.
