I think a biology tutor should provide a fun, engaging and different approach to studying. A tutor should ask questions in a way a teacher hasn't got the time to do. They should always ask what the student wants and implement strategies as to how to attain these goals. But, perhaps at the forefront of responsibility, a tutor should always make…

The most important thing a biology tutor can do for a student is to make themselves welcoming. A good and effective tutor is open to all ideas and willing to completely work with the student. The most effective tutors will offer a variety of perspectives and welcome all criticism and differing opinions. During school, I struggled with breaking…

I believe coming prepared to lessons is the most important thing I can do for my students, so I will always have a lesson plan and teaching aids. I will also come with tools to keep track of my student's progress to have an idea of what level my student is at and tailor my lessons towards their needs and goals. I also like to give my students a…

I strongly believe that the role of a biology tutor, more than anything else, is to inspire a student to believe that they are capable of achieving whatever they put their mind to. Being patient while they're learning is vital in ensuring that they remain patient with themselves especially through times they are struggling with understanding…

Patience! Not everyone learns at the same pace, so it is important to take your time with students so they get the most out of the tutoring sessions. I believe I am good at adapting teaching styles, depending on the student. People learn in different ways, and I think I'm good at catering to how people learn to help them…

The tutor can assist the student in the difficulties they are experiencing in grasping the core concept of the subject. Trying to develop interest in the subject by relating the curriculum with everyday examples that are easier for the student to comprehend and understand. And then build their ability to express it correctly in the exam so that…

To give them confidence and make them feel good about themselves. There is nothing more counter-productive than making a student feel disheartened and bad about themselves, since self-doubt yields anxiety and often poor performance in exams. Establishing a basis of trust is vital for the success of the student, so that they feel in a safe space to…

I think the most important things that a biology tutor and do for a student is to convey the idea that learning should be fun, regardless of whether the process of solving a problem is easy or complex. Being able to enjoy the process of problem solving can go beyond the classroom. Making it enjoyable for the students is critical for any successful…

Be there for the student, often at times, it's only a matter of a little support and confidence in them to see them soar. Catering for a specific teaching pattern that bests suits their learning style and capacity. Helping them learn and understand at their own pace. Build the students competence and therefore confidence so they can solve problems and/or structure essays knowing they have the ability to do so and can achieve a great outcome using their own ability. A tutor should ensure the student fully understands the content they are learning and not just rote learning it. A tutor should make the student…

Teach and help them learn by listening to what it is that they need help with. Each student is different so developing an individual way with each one is very important as a biology tutor. Honesty, if something is wrong with something I can tell a student how to fix it straight away. Another strength of mine is teaching someone how to do something…

The most important thing that a tutor can do for a student is to both create a positive connection with the student and still have fun whilst completing work as well as explain the foundational knowledge for concepts being taught. Inside BulliTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 10 student Josh worked on solving quadratic equations using the quadratic formula and also tackled word problems involving quadratics.

For Year 9, Sarah practised sketching graphs and revisited algebraic factorisation strategies, including product and sum methods.

Meanwhile, Year 8 student Daniel focused on linear equations and strengthened his understanding of rates and ratios through targeted practice questions.

Recent Challenges

A Year 9 student in Bulli struggled with attention to detail when using pronumerals in algebra—assuming the order from previous questions led to errors, as one tutor observed: "He kept mixing up x and y, which changed his answer."

In Year 11, a student's exam performance was affected by feeling overwhelmed under pressure, resulting in incomplete solutions during timed tasks.

For a Year 7 learner, over-reliance on spell-check instead of practicing spelling meant written work improved slowly.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 student avoided showing working for maths problems, believing answers alone were sufficient; this made it difficult to spot where misunderstandings occurred.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Bulli noticed that a Year 9 student, who previously struggled with parabolas, is now confidently describing the shapes of graphs and can quickly identify their equations without hesitation.

In another high school session, Erin was able to use both elimination and substitution methods effectively for solving equations—last term she would get stuck on which approach to try first, but this time she switched between them smoothly.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 student who once hesitated to use finger counting for maths problems now does so openly after some encouragement, allowing him to tackle larger addition questions with far less frustration than before.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Thirroul Branch Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Joseph's Catholic Primary School.
