The most important thing that a chemistry tutor can do for a student is to successfully pass on knowledge they possess to the student in an efficient manner. However, it is also important to instill confidence and motivation within the students as well. My strengths as a tutor lie in my ability as a quick-learner, good communicator and excellent…

1. A tutor should understand the different needs of different students and find a way of teaching that best suits them. So preparing suitable material for different students are very important. 2. Never teach to the test. It not only diminishes the student’s interest in the subject but also prevents them from developing further understanding…

I believe the most important thing a chemistry tutor can do is to inspire confidence in the student. It's not just about teaching concepts, but helping the student believe in their own ability to understand and apply them. A good tutor should adapt their methods to suit each students learning style, making lessons clear, engaging, and enjoyable.…

Communication skills is a vital skill that I have gained through my experience volunteering at a kindergarten and primary school and I would be able to apply this when communicating with the students. Along with communication, I've also taken on the skill of active listening which would be important for when I need to hear a student's or parents'…

I think the most important thing that a chemistry tutor can do for a student is to help them develop a strong sense of confidence in their abilities. One strength, I feel, is that I have had experience in studying a very broad range of subjects - from classical music theory to forensic science - so I have been exposed to a great variety of…

Academically, I want to be able to build a student's confidence in their mastery of the subject, and familiarize the students with questions that may come up in an exam. This is done as I'll get to know the student and create a positive, engaging study atmosphere during the session. Non-academically, I want to help students make studying and their…

I belive that tutors are not merely teachers but mentors that guide students through their learning. Tutors, especially those who has been a student themselves are able to employ their experiences to provide advice to students on effective study methods and techniques that can truely build a student’s confidence for a certain subject. Having…

A tutor should be able to identify the weaknesses and strengths of a student and lift their confidence first. An excellent tutor has patience to work with the student until the student's needs are achieved. Giving positive feedback when they present their work, which will then stimulate their work ethic. I think it is very important to ask the student if they’re still attentive and understanding after every while of teaching. This is because of the student have lost concentration, they will not be able to learn anything and the lesson will be effectively useless. Thus it is important to sometimes insert some humour or times to stretch to regain…

A tutor typically works 1-on-1, therefor it's important to treat each student as an individual and figure out what style of learning works best for them. A tutor should collaborate with the student to help them reach academic heights that they would not be able to with regular schooling alone. I am positive, encouraging, but also thorough. I am…

Inside Burwood EastTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Alex worked on two-digit by two-digit multiplication and progressed to division with remainders, often tackling worded problems for extra practice.

In Year 11, Keshara revised domain and range questions from the Methods syllabus and completed exam-style problems on transformations, including hyperbolas and parabolas.

Meanwhile, Year 12 student Arjun focused on chemical analysis techniques such as IR and NMR spectrometry, alongside interpreting mass spectrometry data through targeted textbook exercises.

Recent Challenges

In Year 11 Maths Methods, a student "forgot to bring his SAC for review," missing a chance to address feedback before the next assessment.

In Year 8 English, homework was incomplete and spelling lists left at home, which meant less progress on writing structure and vocabulary.

A Year 12 Chemistry student's practical report was difficult to follow due to disorganised notes and uncollated results, slowing down her analysis.

Meanwhile, in Year 3–4 Maths, several students continued relying on finger counting instead of memorising times tables—"he still used hands for addition," one tutor noted—which made mental calculations slow during problem-solving.

Recent Achievements

A Burwood East tutoring session saw a Year 3 student, previously hesitant with larger multiplication problems, now requesting to tackle three-digit by two-digit questions and confidently working through each step without relying on memorisation alone.

In Year 11, one student who used to wait for explanations has started proactively asking questions about complex transformation topics, using this initiative to deepen his understanding—especially noticeable during recent exam preparation.

Meanwhile, a Year 12 biology student put together her own practical report-writing guide after struggling with structure earlier in the term, now referring back to it independently while planning new assignments.

What they say about our tutoring

quote

Thanks! Ori is a star, fabulous with both Emma and Oliver and they both think he's wonderful too. A perfect match!

The tuition is going very well - we love Sigrid and Sian has improved in her confidence and ability beyond our expectations.

Liam and Georgie liked Stephanie and found her explanations and teachings simple and easy to understand.  They seem to be very happy with her which is great after only 1 session each!

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Vermont South Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Burwood East Primary School.
