Personally, I believe that tutors play the most crucial role in facilitating a nurturing and interactive learning space, catering their teachings to the student's individual requirements, and offering personalized help, guidance and feedback too. This can be done in a tutor session to allow for students to feel at ease, speak freely, and ask…

Help them to improve their confidence and understanding in subjects and give them the tools to be able to work, study and perform well in exams and assignments on thier own in the future I think that I am good with kids, especially young ones and getting them to work and improve even when they are not confident or prepared to. I also think that…

Someone once told me a great teacher is not a messiah but a guide. As a tutor, I do not gift my mentees the treasure of knowledge but rather act as a guide toward achieving them. I believe the most important thing that a tutor can do for their students in the limited time that they have is to show them how to study on their own and succeed even…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is build their confidence while also making sure they don’t develop resentment toward the content. By adapting to their learning style and keeping things engaging, a tutor can help students see the value in what they’re learning. When students start to enjoy the subject, they’re…

I think it is very important as a tutor to start a topic from its basic and build a strong idea of the subject material so that the student enjoys studying. That is going to boost up the student's confidence on the subject. I can not stress enough about the importance of building confidence in a student. I am very patient with my students and I am…

I realised that the real challenge often isn't the students' abilities but their engagement with the content. My goal as a tutor is to approach material proactively, sparking curiosity and encouraging students to ask 'why?' and 'how?' instead of passively accepting information at face value. I believe in creating an environment where students feel…

Build a trusting relationship with them that makes them feel comfortable asking questions, as the large classroom environment sometimes intimidates kids and makes them feel like a question they want to ask is 'dumb' because everyone else seems fine with the concept (even though they usually aren't). I think adapting to students learning style is vital to allow for the most growth in their education. Tutors are exceptionally valuable as the one on one or small class dynamics allow for the specific needs of a student to be catered for, giving their learning attention in a way that can be difficult to access within the schooling system alone.…

I consider the most important things a tutor can do for a student to be providing the student with the toolbox to be able to solve problems effectively in the chosen subject. In addition, a tutor can provide the student with confidence and belief in oneself, which helps the student academically, and in general. My strengths as a tutor include very…

I believe that a successful tutor is a tutor that capable to make their students become more confident. The students need to believe in themselves in order to make a better progress in their studying. The most important thing is to be a tutor if she can develop these abilities in his student. 1. why they are studying a particular subject? 2. How they can understand the laws of nature by doing science. 3. How they can develop the ability to ask questions? 4. How they can find the right answers to their questions. 5. Science is not a burden…

Teaching effectively so that the student can understand the content. It is important to make the students do their own work, rather than doing it for them as they do not learn effectively if the tutor does the work for them. The tutor must also commit to every class and treat every student equally with respect. - My strength are maths and…

Tutoring is mainly about facilitating the students understanding of concepts, but the tutor should also aim to foster a drive in the student to understand why they are struggling with the respective topic and a will to seek a solution on their own. The tutor should eventually seek to equip students with self-awareness and a drive for…

I believe making a student become confident in their own ability is very important. Firstly, to understand a student's needs based on what they're studying and how best they learn. Secondly, identifying their strengths and weaknesses to determine the most effective teaching strategies for them. Thirdly, to be prepared before each tutoring session (know what topics we are going to cover that day and which exercises to complete).…

Inside Burwood HeightsTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 3 student Ruby worked on strengthening addition and subtraction skills and was introduced to telling time using clocks.

For Year 9, Marcus tackled expanding algebraic equations and applied these in a maths assignment for practical understanding.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Chloe focused on mastering quadratic equations through factorising and expanding exercises, making use of step-by-step practice problems.

Recent Challenges

A Year 10 student working on quadratic equations often skipped showing steps in algebra, which, as a tutor noted, "hid sign errors and made mistakes harder to find." This led to confusion when checking answers and slowed progress in later questions.

In Year 8, during work on probability exercises, a student struggled to identify whether the question required "A and B" or "A or B," often not reading test prompts closely enough—this left parts of answers incomplete.

Meanwhile, a Year 5 learner repeatedly guessed rather than trying her own working; when distracted or unsure, she would ask for help immediately instead of attempting solutions herself.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Burwood Heights noticed one Year 11 student has stopped trying to memorise formulas and instead breaks them down visually, which helped her finally solve problems on bearings by drawing coloured diagrams—a big shift from her earlier confusion.

Meanwhile, a Year 8 student recently managed to catch all the errors she made on her algebra homework and explained why they happened, showing more independence than before.

In primary sessions, a Year 3 girl who used to say "I don't know" now starts counting by twos out loud without prompting or hesitation.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Burwood Library and Community Hub—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Joseph's Catholic Primary School.
