A tutor should identify the students' areas of weakness and focus on helping the students gain knowledge in these areas rather than teaching the student what they already know. When you toss your fishing line into the water, you may have to wait hours to catch your first fish. When caring for a plant, you must water it frequently for several…

A tutor should ensure the student has grasped a conceptual understanding of a topic, not a superficial one. It's highly important that they encourage students to continue asking questions for clarification on grey areas, instead of leaving it ambiguous. I'm very friendly and approachable to children, so I believe my strength lies in being able to…

A tutor's job is to fuel their students' love for learning, make them independent, and lend them a hand when it is needed. A tutor has to be available for a student and has to be a concrete source of education. I am capable of explaining a concept to students in multiple different ways, which directly aids their understanding. I am very…

The most important thing a student can do for a student is help them fully understand why a concept work rather than how to do it. If a student practices answering 100 mathematical problems without knowing how to properly solve them, sure they'll be able to solve those 100 problems but if something else is thrown their way they will have no idea…

The most important things for a maths tutor to do for a student is to be patient, to be a support network for their learning, and to be open to criticism if the teaching style is not what the student wants. The most important things a maths tutor can do for a student is always be patient and adjust to their needs. Often times I see tutors I have previously had stick to a strict guideline set by the centre, not knowing most of us (students) are struggling since they are going too fast. As this role is 1 on 1, this is more important than ever. A tutor…

I think the most important thing that a tutor can do for a student is take the time to understand their students' learning style. Talking time to understand this, enables a tutor to adjust the approach and tailor it to their learning style which will enable them to absorb what they are being taught quicker and to a deeper extent. I believe that I…

Inside CarltonTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Ethan worked through simultaneous equations and revisited key trigonometry skills using practice questions.

In Year 10, Olivia focused on mastering financial maths topics like tax and superannuation, as well as learning how to calculate interest and wages from real-world scenarios.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Zara tackled probability concepts such as mutually exclusive events and two-step experiments, completing chapter reviews from her school textbook for extra reinforcement.

Recent Challenges

Messy or unclear working was a recurring issue in Years 7–10 mathematics, especially with algebra and geometry.

For instance, as noted in Year 8, "needs to improve on writing neater working out," which led to errors when factorising quadratics and drawing diagrams for trigonometry—numbers were hard to read and mistakes crept in unnoticed.

In Year 11, a student "struggled with drawing neat tree diagrams," making it difficult to track probability outcomes.

Forgetting to write reasons during angle proofs in Year 9 meant incomplete solutions even when the logic was correct; marks were lost simply because steps weren't explained.

Recent Achievements

A Carlton tutor noticed a big turnaround for a Year 10 student who struggled last year with simplifying surds—now she tackles them confidently and can explain her steps out loud.

In Year 11, another student impressed by quickly picking up circle geometry, applying new theorems without notes, and showing much more independence during problem-solving than before.

Meanwhile, a younger student made real progress in writing—her handwriting is noticeably larger and neater after weeks of encouragement, making it easier for her to set out her maths working clearly in class assignments.

What they say about our tutoring

quote

Very happy with Luke at the moment. Billie seems keen and is interested in what Luke is showing her. That's a step forward for her when it comes to Maths.

It's going very well so far and Caitlin and Isabella have bonded very well Her confidence is already increasing so I think this will be a good arrangement

Yes we are very happy with Georgia and Catrina seems to be enjoying maths again. I have also recommended Georgia to another parent at my daughters school

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Bexley Branch Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Carlton South Public School.
