I believe a tutor can completely transform a student's in the best way possible. The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is be an exceptional leader. A good leader is someone that can be relied upon, someone who motivates and supports. A good leader is as good a listener as a speaker. I believe, a tutor's obligation is to inspire a…

I can enable students to develop the ability to be confident in themselves and their skills as wekk as be a role model and guiding figure. I like to keep things simple and easy to understand as that's how I learnt course content in high school. As I also struggled in my own studies at a point, I know too well the problems and setbacks students can…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is selflessly provide knowledge that they hold. When I'm tutoring, I not only finish up the topics required for the student, I also give them extra information which might help them in their future endeavors. Even if it is a small statement that the students get to learn, it might impact them…

A tutor always plays a vital role for students. A tutor can provide direction to students and helps them to move ahead. A tutor can make learning very interesting, plain and simple for students to understand the real meaning. - To understand students' requirements (like where they're struggling and how I can make them understand) - Try to make…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student is always be patient and adjust to their needs. Often times I see tutors I have previously had stick to a strict guideline set by the centre, not knowing most of us (students) are struggling since they are going too fast. As this role is 1 on 1, this is more important than ever. A tutor needs…

To inspire the student and help him develop a strong joy in whatever topic. And then giving them a road map for them to be able to to be successful in their studying. I think my biggest strengths as a tutor is that I try to really understand the individual that I'm tutoring. Different people require different approaches to perhaps the same…

A decent tutor is someone who just teaches the content to the student. A great tutor is a mentor who guides the student into a path of success by not only teaching them the academic content well but also providing further help on other aspects that go beyond the classroom. I believe that the most important thing that a tutor can do is to work with a student from a student's perspective. It is exactly the reason why group-studying is so effective as everyone is on the same wavelength. A tutor's job is to be able to "read" into the student's mind and solve-problems by comfortably adjusting and improvising…

I think the most important thing that a tutor can do for a student is take the time to understand their students' learning style. Talking time to understand this, enables a tutor to adjust the approach and tailor it to their learning style which will enable them to absorb what they are being taught quicker and to a deeper extent. I believe that I…

To make sure the student is engaged in the lesson. Not just showing and telling them what the formula is and what does every variable stands but showing them why and how did we have that formula. Deriving formulas, relating topics (eg. pythagorean, distance formula between 2 points) By doing such, it is going to make math more interesting and the…

Inside CarltonTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Ethan worked through simultaneous equations and revisited key trigonometry skills using practice questions.

In Year 10, Olivia focused on mastering financial maths topics like tax and superannuation, as well as learning how to calculate interest and wages from real-world scenarios.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Zara tackled probability concepts such as mutually exclusive events and two-step experiments, completing chapter reviews from her school textbook for extra reinforcement.

Recent Challenges

Messy or unclear working was a recurring issue in Years 7–10 mathematics, especially with algebra and geometry.

For instance, as noted in Year 8, "needs to improve on writing neater working out," which led to errors when factorising quadratics and drawing diagrams for trigonometry—numbers were hard to read and mistakes crept in unnoticed.

In Year 11, a student "struggled with drawing neat tree diagrams," making it difficult to track probability outcomes.

Forgetting to write reasons during angle proofs in Year 9 meant incomplete solutions even when the logic was correct; marks were lost simply because steps weren't explained.

Recent Achievements

A Carlton tutor noticed a big turnaround for a Year 10 student who struggled last year with simplifying surds—now she tackles them confidently and can explain her steps out loud.

In Year 11, another student impressed by quickly picking up circle geometry, applying new theorems without notes, and showing much more independence during problem-solving than before.

Meanwhile, a younger student made real progress in writing—her handwriting is noticeably larger and neater after weeks of encouragement, making it easier for her to set out her maths working clearly in class assignments.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Bexley Branch Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Carlton South Public School.
