1)As a tutor it is very important to understand student's personal needs and cater studies according to that. Get to know them, take few counselling sessions as that would help in getting to know students in a broader way. 2)Be Creative-It is very important for a tutor to be creative. Explaining the same topic in different ways makes a lot of…

The most important thing a tutor can do is to show real life examples or threads that the student can relate to while learning new concepts. The learning in such an approach will lead to a properly spun network of knowledge with related real-life examples which will be easier to recollect for the student. And always make sure to feed what the…

In my point of view, the most important things are: 1. Being able to distinguish the abilities of his student, 2. Finding the best language, method, speed, and as a whole an effective strategy to convey the materials to the student. 3. Being able to make a good connection so that the student feels calm and relaxed and at the same time…

We should guide and support the students through their learning journey and ideally nurture their curiosity towards the different subjects so as to possibly develop a passion for a particular subject. I believe I am quite patient with my students as I have had experience with teaching those that have autism and ADHD before and did not have much…

I consider building a strong relationship with students as a big part of tutoring. Tutors are in a unique position where they aren't teachers nor parents which means that we are here to help the students. However, keeping students motivated is a responsibility tutors must hold in a high regard as it is key to a student success. By building a…

The most important task as a tutor would be to adapt to students’ learning methods. It is imperative to understand that everyone has their own pace and techniques to cope with difficulties, as a tutor, it is my responsibility to account for all possibilities. My strength as a tutor would be my patience. To be honest, it is a skill I’m still…

Communication is the most important thing a tutor should be proficient at, specifically teaching in the way the student is best at learning rather than relaying information in a way that they don't fully understand. My strengths would be my patience and my ability to rephrase concepts catered towards the student so they can understand it the best…

A tutor is the most influencial person in a student's life and can create a strong positive impact on them. They not only teach the proposed subjects but impart lessons for life. They help build the confidence and personality of the individual and help create the next generation to lead tomorrow's world. By nature I am a very patient individual.…

I remember struggling with maths in my childhood, I used to hate it. This one tutor explained a concept that has stuck with me even till now. He said I should try to break down everything complex into the simplest form and stick to the basics. He also said he was confident in me. I feel I have never been the same after that. I found Maths…

Be patient for the student. The tutor can obviously teach them, make notes, give tips and more. However, I think that being patient allows them to be more free with you in the sense that they can be more open in saying I do not understand this or asking the tutor to repeat something. Most of my students love the way I teach. I think it’s because…

A tutor must teach the underlying concepts and "why things work" rather than just "how things work". A good tutor is much more than just a problem solver. Good tutor builds capability in students to actually use what they learnt to solve and analyze complex real world problems. Strong background and grasp of the subject in question. Currently a…

As a tutor, I feel the ultimate goal is to benefit the student to become an independent and confident learner. Mostly, students see their tutors as role models, so it’s very important to keep ourselves updated and supportive throughout and be ready to reach out to them academically and as a friend whenever in need. To conclude, having confidence…

Local Reviews

Tuition sessions are going on really well as my son has had considerable improvements in Maths with better grades ( jumped from C to A) and much better conceptual understanding of several difficult topics. He finds Ben a gentle and consistent tutor who has kept a wonderful rapport with him. They have also covered some topics in English which helped quite a bit. I would certainly recommend Benjamin as a very helpful and effective tutor for teenagers.

Inside CarltonTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Ali worked through operations with fractions—including addition, subtraction, and multiplication with different denominators—and then applied these skills to simplify algebraic fractional expressions.

For Year 8, Max focused on measurement by tackling area problems for irregular shapes (including trapeziums), an introduction to surface area, and a worded question involving the volume of 3D shapes.

In Year 9, Gus practiced converting between units, calculated perimeters, explored surface area, and wrapped up by examining how the angles in any triangle always sum to 180 degrees.

Recent Challenges

In Year 7 mathematics, one student's written working was often incomplete or hard to follow—"could work on writing out his working a little bit more"—making it difficult to identify calculation errors in topics like triangular prism volume.

For a Year 11 student tackling calculus, time management issues during exam practice meant that they rushed through u-substitution questions and missed key steps ("exam taking techniques/time management").

In VCE biology, another student needed frequent revision of cellular respiration; gaps in review led to forgetting process stages such as oxidative phosphorylation when answering short-answer tasks. This created frustration when recalling under pressure.

Recent Achievements

One Carlton tutor noticed Ali, a Year 9 student, was able to transfer her new understanding of fractions into solving algebraic expressions—something she'd previously found tricky.

In a recent high school session, Max showed real initiative by drawing diagrams to tackle complex surface area word problems instead of waiting for prompts.

Meanwhile, Gus (Year 7) shifted from hesitating with unit conversions to confidently using an acronym he created himself and started tackling unfamiliar perimeter questions without pause.

This week, Ali finished by converting mixed numerals independently after initial struggles.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Kathleen Syme Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Carlton Primary School.
