The most important things a tutor can do for a student is to help them to understand problems and have strong basic knowledge. Therefore, they can do their homework without a tutor or teacher to ask. I have a lot of patients to work through problems with others. I can say a word in the easiest way to help others to understand. If my friend has a…

Understand the student's way of thinking. Every student deserves attention from a tutor to channel their thoughts in the right direction. It is the primary responsibility of a tutor to help students strengthen their concepts and build strong fundamentals in subjects. I can relate with younger minds easily and understand the problems that they face…

A good tutor should be able to clearly explain concepts and methods to their students, and should be able to answer any questions a student has and be prepared before the tutoring session for these questions. A good tutor should give the confidence and tools for a student to succeed independently. I think I have a strong knowledge of the VCE…

To provide support in a one on one fashion is extremely valuable. Having extra tools and strategies to tackle questions can only increase ones confidence, which is to say, a tutor can provide what is not always provided in the classroom. It is ultimately this process of developing more confidence and independence in learning that is crucial to…

The most important thing a tutor can do is never give up on a student. A tutor needs to be patient with his pupils since every student cannot grasp a particular concept at the same rate , therefore patience and understanding the student is more important. Be honest. This helps to establish rapport and trust, the two most critical elements to a successful tutoring relationship. Be flexible. Inside Carlton NorthTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Dylan worked through simplifying and calculating surds, including addition, subtraction, multiplication and division using homework examples.

For Year 10, Favour practised solving simultaneous equations and tackled linear graphs word problems.

Meanwhile, Queen (Year 10) focused on applying linear equations to solve worded questions involving real-life scenarios and reinforced her skills with extra practice from homework exercises.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student did not complete assigned homework, which meant less time reinforcing word problem strategies and missed chances to clarify errors.

In Year 10 algebra, skipping written working led to "small mistakes trying to solve in his head instead of using the paper."

For a senior student, messy or incomplete notes in calculus made back-checking difficult—one tutor observed, "she struggled recalling formulae under timed conditions because her notes were disorganized."

Meanwhile, a Year 5 student hesitated to explain steps aloud during fractions work; this avoidance made it harder to spot where confusion began.

Missed practice and incomplete written working often left gaps visible only at assessment time.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Carlton North noticed some genuine breakthroughs recently. One Year 11 student who previously hesitated with VCE statistics questions has started working through past exam problems independently, showing strong problem-solving skills and taking real initiative after just a few sessions.

In another case, a Year 9 student who used to struggle with interpreting information from Venn diagrams was able to confidently explain her reasoning out loud and even picked up on her own mistakes using back-checking strategies.

Meanwhile, a primary school student now tackles word problems with much more confidence than before, completing all the set tasks without prompting.

What they say about our tutoring

quote

Emma and I are very happy with Philip as a tutor.  All is going very well.  Phil seems very reliable and conscientious and offers appropriate support but allows Emma to work the problems herself which she appreciates.

So far all is going well , Andrew is fantastic and easy to communicate with. We have had three sessions so far and this term he will be working on the next unit of work rather than just exam revision.

All seems to be going well with Jared. We are overseas at the moment so have put tutoring on hold. Griffin said he likes Jared and is keen to continue tutoring, he said Jared is incredibly smart and always takes time to explain to him. We were worried as Griff seemed to be really attached to Nick and couldn't believe you would have someone as good to replace him. Where do you find these amazing young men?

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Carlton Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Princes Hill Primary School.
