A tutor needs to be able to make sure that their pupils are able to reinforce the material they learn in school in a fun and interactive way. By doing so. the pupils' interests elevate in the subject and their confidence in their abilities skyrockets. This can be achieved if students think of me as their friend rather than a teacher, with…

Tutoring is very different to a typical classroom setting. Each session is unique and solely focused on the one student. This one-to-one learning experience is something many students wouldn’t normally get in a classroom. Naturally, they’ll be able to ask as many questions as they want. As a result, I’ll feel I’m making a real difference…

The most important thing a tutor must do for a student is to understand the student at a human level and what works best for them in terms of learning strategies. I.e., are they visual learners, do they respond better to a written formula, or something equivalent? It is such an important aspect of tutoring that is fundamental to not only the…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to allow the student to enjoy the process of learning the material. To me, if a tutor is able to create an environment that is enjoyable as well as make the learning process enjoyable it can help the student to improve a lot quicker as they are enjoying the process more. My strongest…

The most important things a tutor can do is build confidence. Confidence in their approach, confidence in their ability and confidence in themselves to solve problems. Additionally, a good tutor can adapt to each students needs and ability, giving them the tools they need to become independent and self reliant. Above all I have found that parents…

To be able to adapt to the student's needs. A classroom style of teaching uses a one size fits all approach of teaching students, but the most important role of a tutor is to vary his methods of teaching to help the student understand the information in their own way. Also, being a guide for the student is very important, as giving the answer to…

I believe it is important that you help students on both an academic and personal level. Fostering self-belief and establishing a growth mindset within students are key priorities of mine as these are invaluable life skills that go beyond the classroom. Furthermore, one of the most meaningful contributions that I can make as a tutor is to…

Strongly understanding their strengths and skills inside and out so that tutors can tailor and adapt to their situations. An example is having the student to solve a question but verbally share his/her thought processes to see if the approach requires improvement e.g does he/she think of drawing a diagram or remembering an equation/rule first?…

I always work with the student/parent initially to establish a goal (however broad or specific) to aim towards in order to develop an action plan and help their students to achieve results. Secondly, I create such a plan of action and apply it, making the necessary tweaks to improve it as we go along. Finally, I always remain adaptable to change…

Being able to meet the needs of the parents and students. Every student is unique and they have goals that they wish to achieve. Although these goals may be similar, I believe a tutor must listen attentively and work towards these particular targets so they can achieve what the student desires. A tutor also has to establish a sense of trust. This…

A good tutor should be several things. They are an accountability partner, a mentor in the area the student wishes to improve in, and they are also a source of inspiration for the student. Doing a couple questions in the lesson but not finishing the rest of the homework is not good enough. It is a huge success for a tutor to be able to encourage…

My son really enjoys his tutor and looks forward to tutoring each week. His confidence has improved in 2 weeks!
Jacqui Gulczynski, Castle Hill

Inside Castle HillTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 10 student Mia worked through past paper questions on quadratic equations and extended her skills with logarithms.

For Year 9, Ethan focused on coordinate geometry problems and applied the sine and cosine rule to find unknown lengths using diagrams.

Meanwhile, Year 8 student Priya practiced adding, subtracting, multiplying, and simplifying fractions before tackling similar triangles and basic trigonometric ratios.

Recent Challenges

In Year 10, a student tackling advanced index laws and coordinate geometry sometimes left challenging assignment questions incomplete, as seen when "did not go through the entire paper, but will do that next week."

In Year 8 algebra work, there was a pattern of not writing all steps—missing signs or mixing up operations—which made error-spotting harder ("needs to know the difference between multiplying and adding algebraic terms").

Meanwhile, in Year 12 annuities lessons, notes flagged an over-reliance on supplied worksheets rather than independent revision. This led to slower progress when faced with less familiar exam-style questions.

Recent Achievements

A Castle Hill tutor recently noticed a big shift in a Year 11 student who had struggled with financial maths; she managed to complete the hardest questions on her own after previously hesitating to even attempt them.

In another session, a Year 9 student who used to make frequent mistakes with indices started catching these errors herself and began asking for clarification when confused instead of just moving on.

Meanwhile, a younger student finally tackled dividing large numbers by learning a new method, after weeks of feeling stuck. At the end of his lesson, he chose extra practice problems without prompting.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Baulkham Hills Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Hills Adventist College, Castle Hill Campus.
