I believe that to be considered a good tutor, one must communicate with their student in order to get the most out of a lesson. The student should walk away after each lesson feeling fulfilled and have a better understanding of content. I believe that I am strong at listening to the student's needs and adapting to fit a system that can benefit…

As I have mentioned above, every student's different capabilities and strategies to learn in their own way need to be considered before even beginning to tutor them. If a tutor teaches without having this in mind, there are chances that even after months of teaching, the student will not grasp the information as well as he/she probably could if…

Help them to do the best they can, and to enjoy doing it. I believe that they go together, that "learning" which is not enjoyed is often, in the long run, not real learning at all, just hoop jumping. Respect for the situations of my students, flexibility in responding to the sometimes substantial differences among them, humour as a means of…

To build a positive professional yet a meaningful relationship with the student. The student sees me as a friend and mentor rather than just a teacher. I think one of the most important things that a tutor can do for a student is to instil confidence within them. I believe confidence is the key for all students across any level to be able to achieve their desired study outcomes. Without the belief that they have the skills and resources to succeed in any aspect they desire, students can be left…

Effective methods of studying, instead of encouraging them to spend too much time and get stressed of the massive load of knowledge. It is so much better if a tutor and teach them how to manage their time and work, how to remember the key concepts and apply them to do the real work. I think the most important thing as a tutor is to share your passion with student. The most effective learning occurs when the student is engaged, invested and passionate in the subject you are teaching. Forming a professional, friendly relationship with the student is key in achieving this. Although improvements in a certain topic of maths…

To help them become confident and self-sufficient in the subject! I work to fill the gaps in knowledge that often hold students back from achieving all they are capable of. I know what it's like to struggle with maths in high school and so relate to students who may be less confident. My approach is to break exercises down into little parts,…

The first thing is to make students not feeling too resistant to math. You need to be interested in a subject in order to achieve a good result. Also, a tutor should make the student feel comfortable and relax, and be confident to do math questions and ask questions. My strength is to use the simplest way to explain math questions. I had always…

Every student has different expectations from a tutor and thus the most important thing might vary from student to student. Some of them might just be looking for a pass in the subject whereas others might be looking for really good grades. For some grades wont even matter and they strive for understanding the subject thoroughly. I believe the…

The most pivotal thing is support. A teacher is essentially a mentor, and mentors are supposed to provide encouragement to the students and make the students fall in love with the subjects. A teacher should assess the performance of the students on a regular basis to ensure the goals of the students are being met. This involves testing them…

In general, I believe that the best way to teach Maths/Science is in a way which the student understands the concepts rather than just giving the student a method to produce an answer, which is how these subjects are commonly taught. 1. A good tutor should be able to clearly explain concepts and methods to their students, and should be able to answer any questions a student has and be prepared before the tutoring session for these questions. A good tutor should give the confidence and tools for a student to succeed independently. I think I have a strong knowledge of the VCE…

Inside Clifton HillTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 10 student Amber revised the quadratic formula and how to use the discriminant to determine the nature of roots, then practiced applying these skills to worded problems.

For Year 11, Olivia focused on factorising cubic polynomials as well as reviewing errors from her recent test using worked examples.

Meanwhile, Year 12 student Ethan tackled logarithms and converting numbers to significant figures, with a focus on interpreting exam-style questions.

Recent Challenges

In Year 9 maths, one student often skipped showing working for algebra and graphing questions—"she tried to do it all in her head," a tutor observed, which led to hidden sign errors that took time to find.

A Year 11 student tended to rush through extended response problems, not checking answers or units, so minor mistakes crept into exam-style practice.

Meanwhile, a Year 6 student regularly doubted his answers and avoided attempting unfamiliar tasks unless shown an example first; this hesitancy slowed progress with fractions and statistics, leaving him uncertain about next steps when working alone.

Recent Achievements

One Clifton Hill tutor recently noticed a big shift in a Year 10 student who used to avoid asking for help—now, he actively requests clarification when stuck, even asking for instructions to be repeated until he's sure, instead of waiting passively.

In senior English, another high schooler brought a list of specific questions she'd struggled with and worked through each one independently, showing far more ownership over her learning than before.

Meanwhile, a younger student who was initially reluctant about long division ended up finishing challenging multiplication problems with 7s, 8s, and 9s quickly and accurately by the end of the session.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as North Fitzroy Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Clifton Hill Primary School.
