I think the most important thing a maths tutor can do for a student is to teach them how to study and learn properly, as it then gives them the ability to use that skill outside of tutoring sessions and greatly improve their grades as well as their academic confidence. Another thing I believe to be important is making the learning experience as…

I believe that the most important things a maths tutor can do for a student are to develop their problem solving skills in a way that when they encounter a new problem in the future they will be able to apply their skills and break the problem down to solve it. I also believe that a tutor should work to develop a student's confidence in their own…

Work through the concepts that the student is struggling with in school and reinforce and re-explain it until the student understands it. Never deviate from what the student is learning in school, unless it is to fill in gaps in learning.  Where possible, have an ongoing dialogue with the parents and teacher of the student. I would also suggest…

While the goals of every student are individual and varied, and any tutor should adjust their style accordingly, I believe there are a few things a maths tutor can do for any student. They can provide a space where a student feels safe and comfortable expressing themselves, inspire the student to feel confident in their skills and give the student…

Patience and humour during the tutorial. A true interest in their situation. Listen to their way of thinking, reflecting back both the helpful and harmful logic patterns. Make them feel capable, not overwhelmed but stretched enough to feel they are achieving - this builds confidence. Keep the subject fresh and exciting, go outside the…

The most important things a maths tutor can do for their students is to teach with patience and in a tutor setting. It is important to remember that not all students have the same skill set. It is also important to remember that you are not in a classroom with 20+ students. A tutor has the ability to dig deep into the struggles of the student and…

For me, the most important aspect of tutoring is being able to breakdown a concept which the student finds challenging into its key components and then explain them in a way which really resonates with a student. By doing this not only are you helping the student to understand the topic, you are enabling to student to apply the idea or concept to…

Beyond simply helping a student improve their grades, I believe a maths tutor should aim to further engage their students in their learning and to actively enjoy school. It's one thing to explain to a student how to approach concepts and assessment tasks, but to actively encourage them to love school is something that separates a good tutor from a…

Students might not know the reason behind their difficulties in learning something, or they may not notice that they have misconceptions that block further learning, so they need tutors to help them out. I have a positive attitude even when the student is wrong, I correct them by not saying that they were wrong but by picking up the same topic and explaining it in the correct manner. Inside Clifton HillTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 10 student Amber revised the quadratic formula and how to use the discriminant to determine the nature of roots, then practiced applying these skills to worded problems.

For Year 11, Olivia focused on factorising cubic polynomials as well as reviewing errors from her recent test using worked examples.

Meanwhile, Year 12 student Ethan tackled logarithms and converting numbers to significant figures, with a focus on interpreting exam-style questions.

Recent Challenges

In Year 9 maths, one student often skipped showing working for algebra and graphing questions—"she tried to do it all in her head," a tutor observed, which led to hidden sign errors that took time to find.

A Year 11 student tended to rush through extended response problems, not checking answers or units, so minor mistakes crept into exam-style practice.

Meanwhile, a Year 6 student regularly doubted his answers and avoided attempting unfamiliar tasks unless shown an example first; this hesitancy slowed progress with fractions and statistics, leaving him uncertain about next steps when working alone.

Recent Achievements

One Clifton Hill tutor recently noticed a big shift in a Year 10 student who used to avoid asking for help—now, he actively requests clarification when stuck, even asking for instructions to be repeated until he's sure, instead of waiting passively.

In senior English, another high schooler brought a list of specific questions she'd struggled with and worked through each one independently, showing far more ownership over her learning than before.

Meanwhile, a younger student who was initially reluctant about long division ended up finishing challenging multiplication problems with 7s, 8s, and 9s quickly and accurately by the end of the session.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as North Fitzroy Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Clifton Hill Primary School.
