A tutor should be able to provide clarity in moments of doubt and confusion. Encourage practice and definitely believe in the student. Studying should be made interesting and not one sided as it can turn out to be really fun. I am extremely patient and organized. I will be planning notes and classes to make sure that we are always one step ahead…

I think the most important thing for a tutor is to empower their students, helping their students to be more confident in themselves and also in the relevant subject. Firstly, I can communicate well with children. I am also very perceptive and good at understanding the problems or questions my students have. I am great at providing explanations to…

The most important thing is to listen and understand your students. Once you understand what they want and need, and how they work, you can develop teaching and learning methods that can push them to their best selves. Communication is also vital in a tutor-student dynamic. I tend to observe people a lot, so it’s easy for me to figure out their…

Having received a lot of tutoring growing up, I know first-hand how challenging it can be to grasp difficult concepts. The tutors who made the biggest difference for me were patient, supportive, and able to adapt to my learning style. They not only helped me understand content but also built my confidence and sparked my curiosity. That experience…

This is because, with empathy and encouragement, students will perform better as they are more engaged and motivated in subjects they are studying. Furthermore, a tutor should give strategies…

Everybody learns differently, and trying to apply the same approach to everyone is going to leave students struggling and frustrated. I adapt my teaching style to the way a student learns, and don't enforce a certain way of thinking - instead, I equip them with the tools to approach any problem in a way that works for them. I have two years'…

The most important thing a tutor can do is make sure they don't generalize their teaching across all students. Encourage them. It is important to make a student feel like they are doing well. Everyone needs encouragement, especially someone who is already struggling. One of the most important things a tutor can do for a student is to listen to them. To ask and listen to what the student needs in order to understand difficult concepts goes a long way in ensuring students receive the most out of their sessions. A tutor's main goal should be to help the student develop the tools to go into the classroom and be confident about their skills, and hopefully, eventually, go on with their education, and ultimately their future, without a tutor. What I consider to be the most important things a tutor can do for a student is understanding the pace the student requires and not focusing on how much a student can complete in a set time. Another one is being available for the student when possible as students may not think of questions or ideas when they are with me. My strengths as a tutor is…

Local Reviews

It is only one week since we commenced Grade 6 maths tutoring but so far I have been extremely happy with the overall service, communication levels, speed of commencement and we now have a lovely tutor that I think my daughter will enjoy working with on a weekly basis.
Shelley Barrett, Coburg

Inside Coburg NorthTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Sarah focused on phonics and common spelling words, practicing through reading exercises.

For Year 11, Michael worked on applying Newton's laws to cars with trailers involving friction, as well as inclined plane calculations using F=ma.

Meanwhile, Year 12 student Alex explored electromagnetic fields—covering ratios, dot and cross products—and extended this into Lenz's and Faraday's laws by analyzing flux changes using diagrams.

Recent Challenges

In Year 12 Physics, Erin's exam and SAC performance has often been affected by time management and confidence when translating worded problems into equations—one session noted, "she wasn't fully able to answer a 3-mark written response about Air resistance…and seemed a little rattled."

Calculator entry errors have also recurred, with correct formulas but inaccurate final answers.

Earlier in the year, she occasionally arrived without worked homework questions due to organization lapses.

In contrast, a Year 4 student's work revealed frequent issues with handwriting clarity and layout when tackling Venn diagrams or reading comprehension tasks, making their reasoning difficult to follow during review.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Coburg North noticed a high school student who, after previously losing marks to small errors and timing issues on her SACs, now confidently explains her maths reasoning out loud and has started critiquing and defending her solutions—something she used to avoid.

Another older student recently took the lead in sessions by setting the agenda herself, bringing up integrals and wave problems she wanted help with, showing a new level of independence compared to waiting for guidance.

Meanwhile, a younger primary student who once rushed through reading is now pausing to sound out words before moving on.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Preston Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Mercy College.
