The most important things a maths tutor can do for a student involve making the student understand the concepts at a deep level, rather than tutoring them solely for the purpose of achieving higher grades. I believe a good tutor should remove the fear of a subject, if any, from a student's mind and encourage them to learn in more detail, while…

I think, the main part is understanding. Tutor should help students in understanding of the concepts and their purpose. Secondly, tutor should be understanding, so that he/she serves students according to their needs as different students have different ways of visualising things. Thirdly, tutor should help in planning of the subject so that…

Inside Concord WestTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Nick completed an English assessment focused on oral communication, reading comprehension, and writing skills such as organising ideas and editing.

In Year 11, Sophie reviewed the causes of inflation—including demand-pull, cost-push, and imported inflation—and explored how inflationary expectations affect the economy.

Meanwhile, Year 12 student Daniel tackled Australia's Balance of Payments by breaking down the Current Account and Capital and Financial Account, then worked through measuring relative exchange rates using both individual currencies and the Trade Weighted Index.

Recent Challenges

In Year 11 Economics, one student relied heavily on scanning class notes without pausing to make their own summaries or practice deeper exam-style questions. As noted, "more practice before the exam is recommended given the amount of content," but rushed reading meant connections between topics like inflation and unemployment were missed.

Meanwhile, a Year 9 Maths student often left calculation steps out—especially when dividing fractions—which led to "unnecessary mistakes" in multi-step problems.

For a Year 7 English task, another learner skimmed texts quickly, missing key similarities and differences; this left writing disjointed and lacking evidence for main ideas.

Recent Achievements

A Concord West tutor recently noticed Khai, a senior student, making significant strides in Economics—he went from hesitating over unfamiliar business terms to confidently inferring meanings and leading strong discussions about funding sources.

In Year 11 Business Studies, another student who previously wrote mainly descriptive responses has begun shifting towards more analytical writing after targeted feedback.

Meanwhile, Zarraf in primary English sessions now maintains eye contact and expands on his ideas when prompted; this marks a big change from earlier reluctance to share during oral tasks. Last session, he even used contextual clues to infer the meaning of challenging new words.

What they say about our tutoring

quote

The one on one tutoring is definitely assisting Caitlin for Maths. She is seeing a slight improvement and beginning to understand topics in more depth. She is building rapport with Bernadeine; so all is going well at this stage.

Cara is very happy with Ishwarya as her tutor. They have an easy, productive working relationship already after only three weeks, Cara was comfortable with Ishwarya after the first week.

William is excited as he is learning more with Bailey than with his math's teacher. Baileys methods are easy to follow and very helpful. Bailey is always on time and puts in 110%. After every session, you can see the smile on William's face and his new found confidence. We are very impressed and very lucky to have Bailey tutor William.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Strathfield Council Library Service—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Ambrose Catholic Primary School.
