One of the important that a tutor can do for a student is being a good listener. Before heading towards the subject content the tutor needs to listen to their students. We need to know their mood and level of understanding in order to continue. There is no use in continuing with the subject if the student doesn't understand anything, so the tutor…

Mentoring and conveying to the students what is required to solve the problems. Always try to show what are the rules/principles behind any of the…

As a tutor, I firmly believe in the profound impact that effective education can have on a student's life. Drawing from my experience in teaching as a CSR activity, I recognize several essential aspects that I consider crucial in nurturing a student's growth and learning journey. 1. The outright role of a tutor is to improve a student's area of understanding of a subject and thus improve their grades for it. But a tutor should also recognise if a student may be more successful in a different path, and guide them to their preferred successes. A good tutor carries out their actions for their students, even if it is not of…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to teach them complex concepts or topics they are struggling with without overwhelming them. I think it can be easy to overcome students with work, which can cause high-stress levels. Finding the right balance of pushing the student to do better while supporting them and not stressing them…

Listen. Students often feel overwhelmed and are unable to understand content because they don’t feel they are truly being listened to - something I relate to as a former student, and can easily combat by employing listening as paramount. I am incredibly patient and able to vary my methods of communication to connect with divergent personalities.…

Tutoring in my opinion is not only putting pen to paper. Inside Condell ParkTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 9 student Tarek practised probability with Venn diagrams and basic set notation, while Year 10 student Omar worked on trigonometric ratios using SOH CAH TOA and exact value tables from Exercise 6A of the Cambridge textbook.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Sarah focused on polynomial division and learned to apply the remainder theorem through guided examples and homework questions.

Recent Challenges

A Year 9 student's algebra work was often hard to follow, as messy setting out and misaligned equal signs disrupted their thought process—"his working out needs a lot of work, can be messy at times," one tutor noted.

In Year 12, forgetting to show all steps in calculus led to avoidable errors on exam questions, which meant time was lost rechecking answers instead of building confidence.

Meanwhile, a Year 6 student relied heavily on using fingers for calculations when faced with worded problems involving operations, slowing progress and masking gaps in applying multiplication or division flexibly.

Recent Achievements

One Condell Park tutor noticed a big shift with a Year 11 student who, after struggling to set out "show and prove" questions clearly, now draws diagrams first and uses them to guide her answers—something she hadn't tried before.

In Year 10, another student recently tackled domain and range by asking the hardest questions he could think of, then worked through each one until he understood fully instead of giving up early.

Meanwhile, a primary student named Scarlett shaved time off her times tables speed test and raised her score after practicing strategies suggested in tutoring sessions.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Canterbury Bankstown Library Service—or at your child's school (with permission), like Condell Park Public School.
