I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is listen to what they are asking, and targeting their weak areas within the prospective subject. By doing so the tutor should aim to tailor each lesson accordingly. I think my strengths as a tutor would be my perseverance, clarity when explaining concepts, the ability to identify a…

When I was at school, my favourite teachers were always the relatable ones who were genuinely interested in me, my hobbies and my life. This connection is important for many reasons, not only to be a good tutor but to also be a confidant in times of crisis. In the past I have worked with children who had special needs. Being close to the student…

I think helping students understand how to approach a question and learning how to discipline themselves is the most important. Constantly reminding them to complete their homework so we can go over their mistakes next time is also important in establishing a routine and will hopefully give them an incentive to do the same with school. I believe I…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do is to ultimately listen to the student's need, academically and also personally. I believe being available to the students is also super important as it helps them to think that they're not alone in this high school journey as us the tutors have gone through it and can share our experiences and…

Whilst a tutor is only present with their student for a limited time, they can help by providing a clear understanding of what the syllabus wants and giving resources. They are also there to answer and clarify a student’s questions and assist in developing a structured work routine. Since I have recently completed the HSC and have studied the…

As a tutor, I can advise a student on their study skills and motivation and most importantly, assist them if they have any difficulties learning something in a topic at school. I believe the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to tailor their teaching approach to meet the individual needs of each student. For example, I work with a student who has mild ADHD and struggled with maintaining focus. To address this, I incorporated short physical activities, such as star jumps, into our sessions every 15…

The students already have teachers at school. Rather than being just another teacher figure, a tutor is also a mentor that travels on a journey alongside the student. As such, the most important things they can do for the child is to be compassionate, patient, and support the child with the goals they want to achieve. I am patient, I take the time…

Being supportive for a student no matter what the situation is. Creating a realistic goal and achievement for the student and working together to strive towards that. I consider many things which a tutor can do for a student like a tutor can also be a motivator for his students and motivate them to learn. He must clarify the concepts and solve the doubts of his students. A tutor can build a supportive & encouraging environment which can empower students to become independent learners. Being a tutor, I find my…

The roles of a tutor, like teachers, are to assist students academically and emotionally so they will be doused with the experiences and skills that they need to succeed in the working environment or in…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is teach them the formulaic way of how to study. There is a set procedure that is unique to every individual and subject of how to fully understand and apply various concepts. Once one is able to find that procedure and develop it, they are able to learn much more in their given subject. In…

To engage their student in what they are being taught. Often, it is easy for tutors to treat teaching as a rote-memory recitation of their materials, without actually using other analogies and connective methods that students benefit from. If a tutor is unwilling to invest energy into their lessons, a student likewise will gain little enrichment.…

Inside Condell ParkTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 9 student Tarek practised probability with Venn diagrams and basic set notation, while Year 10 student Omar worked on trigonometric ratios using SOH CAH TOA and exact value tables from Exercise 6A of the Cambridge textbook.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Sarah focused on polynomial division and learned to apply the remainder theorem through guided examples and homework questions.

Recent Challenges

A Year 9 student's algebra work was often hard to follow, as messy setting out and misaligned equal signs disrupted their thought process—"his working out needs a lot of work, can be messy at times," one tutor noted.

In Year 12, forgetting to show all steps in calculus led to avoidable errors on exam questions, which meant time was lost rechecking answers instead of building confidence.

Meanwhile, a Year 6 student relied heavily on using fingers for calculations when faced with worded problems involving operations, slowing progress and masking gaps in applying multiplication or division flexibly.

Recent Achievements

One Condell Park tutor noticed a big shift with a Year 11 student who, after struggling to set out "show and prove" questions clearly, now draws diagrams first and uses them to guide her answers—something she hadn't tried before.

In Year 10, another student recently tackled domain and range by asking the hardest questions he could think of, then worked through each one until he understood fully instead of giving up early.

Meanwhile, a primary student named Scarlett shaved time off her times tables speed test and raised her score after practicing strategies suggested in tutoring sessions.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Canterbury Bankstown Library Service—or at your child's school (with permission), like Condell Park Public School.
