I think a lot of the more important parts of tutoring is involved in the study technique and supporting students to find the motivation in themselves to study and do the work. Being the person that has got their back. Although of course the specific content they are learning is important as well. In addition a lot of students struggle with…

A tutor can help create a safe environment for a child to voice their concerns with learning which they may feel unable to do in a class setting. Having one-on-one tutor sessions can also help a child to target exactly what they are struggling with. A tutor also has more time with that student to assess what they are good at in order to keep…

I believe a tutor is all about being able to be the middle man between teachers and students. They are able to act in a professional manner but also can individually suit the needs of a specific student. In doing this tutors are able to fill in those missing links and hopefully create a sense of confidence in students that they might otherwise…

Local Reviews

Jessica went really well with Zara. We're really impressed with how focused Zara is during the session/s and this is obviously in part to Jessica's approach and interest in the student. Certainly off on the right start.

Inside Cooks HillTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Ava practised division and multiplication facts using short tests and visual aids, while Year 9 student Lucas focused on algebraic equations and linear relationships by reviewing actual exam questions.

Meanwhile, in Year 11, Ethan worked through financial maths topics including depreciation and shares, tackling more challenging dividend yield calculations with step-by-step examples to deepen understanding.

Recent Challenges

In Year 11 Mathematics, one student relied heavily on formula substitution without fully grasping underlying concepts—"she is too reliant on putting numbers into a given formula," noted the tutor, especially in financial maths. This habit led to uncertainty when unfamiliar wording or new problem types appeared.

Meanwhile, a Year 8 student's written working was often disorganised and hard to follow, with steps jumbled or missing, which made reviewing errors difficult and slowed progress on worded questions.

Across both years, confidence wavered after setbacks; "I don't know" responses replaced attempts when questions looked challenging, limiting growth in problem-solving and retention.

Recent Achievements

One Cooks Hill tutoring session saw a Year 10 student, Danika, start bringing her own list of tricky questions from class to discuss—something she never used to do. She's also begun tackling homework before lessons rather than leaving it until the last minute.

In Year 12, Liz recently worked through challenging financial maths exam questions and explained her answers out loud, showing clear reasoning and even teaching her tutor some steps—a big change from earlier sessions when she hesitated to speak up.

Meanwhile, Lara in Year 7 independently completed a new problem with linear equations without any prompts for the first time.

What they say about our tutoring

quote

Andrew is very happy with Stephen's tutorials. They have already formed a very healthy teacher student relationship, and Andrew is enjoying his Maths.  He got everything correct in a test he did at school last week.  The only thing that was incorrect was the fact that his decimal point was not in the correct place.

Just letting you know that Layla is gaining a lot from Jacob and in only three weeks.  Her confidence is starting to grow little by little and she is trying more on her own which is great to see.

Everything is going well. Lizzy and I are very happy with Michael and pleased with her results so far.
