The most important things a tutor can do for a student is create a positive and open learning environment, understand their learning styles, and provide as much help as possible. Having had tutors during my high school/VCE experience, these are the traits that I would look for in tutors too. As a tutor I think my strengths are personal experience,…

Make sure that students feel comfortable in the environment of learning, and not just teaching them the concepts they need to get good grades but also help them develop skills that can be applied later in life like critical thinking, I think it’s also important that as tutors, we help take some of the stress that naturally comes with school off…

A tutor's most important role is to create an environment where students feel comfortable making mistakes and asking questions. I learned this from my own tutor, who was friendly and patient, letting me make mistakes before gently guiding me to the right answers. Being encouraging is the most important thing a tutor can do for a student. A student who is made to feel comfortable and supported - in a way that is often impossible in a school setting with 30+ children - may feel motivated and empowered to take control of their education. Encouraging a student can ameliorate the stressful feelings associated…

- A tutor needs to be able to guide the students into considering the application of what they are learning and being able to provide them with the support that they need. A tutor typically works 1-on-1, therefor it's important to treat each student as an individual and figure out what style of learning works best for them. A tutor should collaborate with the student to help them reach academic heights that they would not be able to with regular schooling alone. I am positive, encouraging, but also thorough. I am…

I believe that letting a student know that I care for her/him is essential to earn her/his trust and full attention. To be able to truly listen to a student about what exactly they are struggling/worried about, and help them gain confidence in their own abilities. For students that are already doing quite well academically, the best thing a tutor could do is enhance their curiosity for knowledge and help them extend their knowledge. Most of all, making learning…

Being understanding, confident and respectful are key aspects in a tutor- student relationship. These three qualities ensure the reliability and integrity of the tutor. Inside Cranbourne EastTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Arman focused on improving multiplication using box and lattice methods, then revisited addition and subtraction skills through targeted worksheets.

In Year 8, Mahima tackled simultaneous equations by learning both the substitution and elimination methods, alongside expanding and factorising algebraic expressions.

For Year 10, Jessica concentrated on drawing linear graphs by calculating gradients and intercepts, as well as applying index laws for multiplying and dividing indices with like bases.

Recent Challenges

In Year 8 maths, messy or unclear written calculations led to confusion, especially when simplifying algebraic expressions—one tutor observed, "She needs to fix some of her maths layout, primarily on how she sets out her calculations."

A Year 10 student hesitated to ask for help with difficult worded problems and spent too long worrying about unfamiliar concepts, which slowed progress.

In senior years, a lack of double-checking persisted in probability and indices work; mistakes often went unnoticed because answers weren't reviewed.

When homework was incomplete in Year 7 algebra tasks, earlier gaps in times tables knowledge remained unaddressed.

Recent Achievements

One Cranbourne East tutoring session saw a Year 10 student finally stop needing the tutor's approval after every algebra step; she now checks her own work and only asks for feedback at the end, a big change from before when she needed reassurance throughout.

A high schooler who used to get stuck on index laws now completes homework independently and has improved her maths layout significantly.

In Year 5, one student who was hesitant about long division is starting to write out each step methodically, even converting remainders into fractions—a habit he hadn't tried before.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Cranbourne Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Cranbourne East Primary School.
