Patience is key. Everyone can learn anything if they put in enough effort. As a tutor, it is your job to build an environment for your student where they can flourish. 1. I have a desire to impart my knowledge to students. 2. I teach topics in their simplest possible form. It is important to explain concepts in terms of what you already know…

It is not to reveal the answer but to guide them through the process of discovering the answer. Give a man a fish he is fed for a day, but teach a man to fish and he is fed for a lifetime. I have recently gone through high school, thus I can relate to the student. I am kind, compationate, and patient which I believe to all be necessary…

A tutor should spend time to listen to the needs of the student and spend time to build the students confidence in their own ability. By being a listener and confidence builder, this can inspire the student to tackle challenging and difficult problems and questions therefore imparting not just academic skills but life skills as well. Knowledge of…

For a tutor, three key actions are crucial. First, they must create a safe space where students can openly discuss their struggles and request alternate explanations. Second, ongoing communication is essential, to ensure the curriculum is thoroughly covered and to pinpoint and understand weak areas. This allows students to ask for repeated or…

I consider the time and space a tutor gives to the student the most important thing. It is all about what they, as the student, are comfortable with. However, this does not stop another important aspect; pushing a student through their limits in order to achieve their goals. These are the most important things a tutor can do for a student. I…

Personally, I believe that students come to tutors for a reason: commitment. Even though I am not an official school teacher, I try to make sure that students walk out of the tutoring session with a reasonable understanding of a particular topic, despite the fact that they might have learned about it at school already. I think it is necessary that…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student, especially in subjects relating to the sciences or math, is to properly build the foundations of the subject. To make sure that their basic understanding of a subject is there before advancing to more difficult parts of a course. I believe by establishing these foundations, it makes…

To me, the two most important things a tutor can do for a student are: 1. Providing a student with a strong base understanding of a topic so that they can succeed in learning while at school (e.g. contributing well to class discussions). 2. Helping a student refine and better understand what they were taught in class. I think I have a strong…

Inside CrawleyTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Tanisha focused on trigonometric functions, specifically working through where and why she finds these challenging.

In Year 10, Chloe prepared for an upcoming Matrices test by tackling matrix operations and understanding adjacency matrices as used in different graph types.

Meanwhile, Year 4 student Sofia practised addition and subtraction of two- and three-digit numbers along with revision of multiplication tables for improved number fluency.

Recent Challenges

In Year 8 Maths, one student often avoided writing out steps when tackling equations, preferring to "solve in his mind"—this led to confusion and errors, especially as problems became more complex.

In Year 11 English, another student struggled with essay planning and left arguments underdeveloped; a tutor noted, "he needs more practice in forming concise points which support his argument."

Meanwhile, in Year 6 Maths, a student was quick to use the calculator before attempting questions independently. These habits resulted in lost marks or incomplete understanding during assessments, causing visible frustration and dented confidence mid-task.

Recent Achievements

A Crawley tutor recently saw Chloe, a high school student, start making her own summary notes during lessons—she'd previously relied only on verbal explanations, but now refers back to her written notes when tackling practice problems in Matrices.

In another session, Gabriel, also in high school, showed a shift by recalling formulas for area and volume from memory without prompts; earlier sessions had him frequently pausing to check or ask for reminders.

Meanwhile, Flynn (Year 6) moved from needing step-by-step help with rearranging equations to working through hypotenuse problems independently after just a few guided examples.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Nedlands Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Nedlands Primary School.
