The mentor should be able to learn the needs of the students and help them grow accordingly. Secondly, a good rapport with students is very important to create a healthy and learning environment. I have always been able to adapt well to the students' needs and create a friendly environment which makes learning fun. However, I am also…

Be a good friend with the student first. Teach him as if he his friend is teaching him. Be strict at a times when he is not listening but its good for him so its ok to be strict sometimes. I catch the loop hole of the child where he has maximum tendency to make mistakes. So that I can focus on that main area. I am a very friendly teacher and…

The most important things a biology tutor can do for a student is be patient and listen to what they aren't understanding. Also to be able to identify that is a student isn't understanding a concept then the tutor needs to be able to recognise this and try to explain it to them in a different way. I think my strengths as a tutor are that I am a…

Most important thing would be to know what the goal of the student is and help them and support them in achieving their goal in a friendly environment. A tutor should be able to offer many different explanations so that the student has a better chance of understanding a particular concept. Most important is to make the student feel at ease and be…

Students are different from each other, some are fast learner while others are the opposite. As a biology tutor, I think its important to deliver a lesson that is easy to comprehend regardless of how academic the students are. I am more to lean to visual than texts. Since one of my hobbies is drawing, I would use this skill to deliver visual aid…

Giving the student the self-confidence and self-esteem that they can accomplish their work and work out the solutions to problems, with guidance. Every student is different and every student has different ways of understanding concepts. Some might learn them easily via a practical approach while others focus on the theory first. I believe encouragement is the most important thing a biology tutor can do. By focusing on what they have achieved rather then what they haven't, the children can gain a sense of self worth and achievement, making them more likely to want to learn more. By always being there to support them through difficult content, a tutor can develop trust with…

I consider an improvement in confidence incredibly significant to a child's attitude to learning. If a student is confident in their abilities to learn a subject, then they will be more likely to put effort into correcting their mistakes. This confidence and ability to recognise improvement will directly and positively affect the student's self…

Listening and being patient. Just because something makes sense to you doesn't mean it is easy for the student. Letting the student explain where they are struggling and really listening to them can help the tutor to better understand their problem. Being patient is crucial as learning always takes time and its our job to ensure the student isn't…

The most important thing a biology tutor or any teacher can do, I think, would be to instill confidence in the students own ability to do deal with the task given, whatever that task may entail. The most important thing a biology tutor can do for a student is to not spoon-feed the student. Inside CurrambineTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Mia worked through algebraic expressions and past test questions on area, using actual test papers to target problem-solving skills.

For a Year 9 student, lessons focused on trigonometry (including ratios and solving for unknown sides) as well as straight line graphs, often practicing with diagram-based examples.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 student tackled equivalent fractions alongside addition and subtraction of mixed numbers and improper fractions, applying these concepts in real-world word problems.

Recent Challenges

In Year 5 mathematics, one student repeatedly relied on a times tables chart and hesitated without it, showing that over-reliance on aids undermined her confidence in mental calculations.

As noted, "she lines up decimals well when focused, but loses track if distracted," revealing that lapses in focus directly affected accuracy during decimal work.

In Year 9 algebra, another student avoided revisiting past errors or reviewing missed steps; as one tutor put it, "she forgot how to convert improper fractions until prompted."

In senior trigonometry, messy working meant formulas were chosen incorrectly and key relationships were missed—resulting in extra time spent correcting avoidable slips instead of progressing.

Recent Achievements

One Currambine tutor noticed a Year 10 student who previously hesitated to ask for help now confidently requests clarification when stuck, instead of guessing—especially during trig problem-solving.

In another high school session, a Year 9 student started setting out their algebra working more clearly after struggling with layout before, which helped them spot and fix their own mistakes.

Meanwhile, a younger student in Year 4 has begun using the column method independently; last week she solved decimal money problems on her own and explained her thinking out loud as she worked.

What they say about our tutoring

quote

Evangeline is lovely. She is very patient with Steph and takes the time to explain things quite clearly to her. After Evangeline has been, Steph is very happy and excited that she has learned something new.

Jane is great. She is easy to talk to and seems very keen to help Tanner. Tanner also likes her and he already seems to have learnt things from her and is remembering it. While kids generally don't like any form of school work, Tanner seems to enjoy being tutored by Jane. She makes things fun for him.

Gary has been a good personality fit with Myles. He has been gentle and encouraging and Myles is motivated to do more maths throughout the week where previously he was feeling it was all too hard.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Joondalup Public Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Currambine Primary School.
