Optimism. Students need positivity and confidence above all else. As a tutor we need to make sure that we show them that every cloud has a silver lining and every problem they face they will only get stronger from those mistakes they make. Students get demotivated very quickly and it hits their ego when they can't seem to tackle a problem and this…

Being emphatic. I might be biased here, but it's only through empathy that you can help someone understand what you do understand. I believe I am really emphatic, so I almost always manage to understand at what point, in the logical pipeline of understanding a concept, a certain student has difficulty. I am patient and calm, there is no reason to…

A tutor can change the perspective of a student towards the subject he/she is teaching. A tutor can build the concepts for basic learning in an effective way so that a student never faces a problem in those concepts. As a tutor. I am very patient. I can solve a single problem for a student as many times as he/she wants. I believe in a practical…

The most important thing a tutor can do is understand the needs of the student and teach them accordingly. Every student has their strengths and weaknesses. That is why a good rapport is needed to cater to the student's needs and help them succeed in their academic efforts. I believe gradually building confidence in the student through proper…

Based on my experience, I think it is very important to not only teach/lecture the knowledge/skills to prepare the students for a particular test or subject. It is also important to train the student to have the ability to seek answers on his own. In short, I believe in "teaching someone how to fish is always better than giving him a fish" in…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do is understand the student’s point of view and teach in a fun, engaging way that makes it easier for them to learn. Tutors should have a genuine interest in helping their students learn. My strengths are that I have experience as a tutor, I’m friendly and patient, and because I was recently a high…

One of the most important things a tutor can do for a student is to build their confidence in their subjects. By clarifying and helping them practice concepts that they have learnt at school, taking tutoring lessons builds their confidence in answering questions in school and during exams. A tutor should also be a mentor to their students, and…

I think the most important thing I can do for my students is to help them achieve their goals or improve their grades by understanding what they understand from the content. I believe building a relationship with the student is one of the most important things a tutor can do for a student, as it allows the tutor to recognize that each student has their own unique learning styles. These can only be identified during a session when a rapport between the student and tutor is established, and once this connection is made…

The most valuable skill I can teach a student is how to learn new topics and build an understanding that fosters their further education beyond our lessons. A tutor helps the student understand the subject matter in detail and at ease. He/she breaks the complex problem which require analytical skills to simpler arithmetic problems a student can work on. This in turn builds confidence in the student who in turn can easily interpret exam-setting questions as well as real life logic with ease. I like to…

I believe a tutor should be confident in his/her abilities and express enthusiasm in teaching the student. A tutor should be honest and upfront about the student's misconceptions and errors and offer advice in a calm and helpful tone. A tutor should be able to share some of his/her own experiences to deepen the connection with the student. A tutor…

Any tutor needs to know that learning can't be forced. What's important is for us to help them to ignite the flames of passion to learn a subject through a fun and interactive session. Which ultimately, helps them to better understand everyday life by applying what they learned. Like how everything can be formulated into equations and how food…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to recognise that all kids are different with unique skills and needs. Communicate, as I believe the reason most student turn to tutoring services is due to a lack of proper communication from usual teachers leading to them misunderstanding or lacking knowledge in certain areas of a subject. A good tutor should be all about building up a student's confidence, giving them helpful feedback, and providing personalized support. Boosting a student's self-belief is important because it makes them more motivated to learn. Giving feedback that's not just critical but also positive helps them see their strengths and areas to work on. And…

Inside DaceyvilleTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Despina worked on understanding the area and volume of 2D and 3D shapes, along with practicing perimeter calculations.

Year 8 student Michael focused on simplifying algebraic expressions and applying the Pythagoras theorem to geometry problems, using visual examples for clarity.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Sophia tackled chemistry syllabus content by reviewing electron configurations (spdf notation) and exploring trends in periodicity, including atomic radius and first ionisation energy.

Recent Challenges

Frequent reliance on calculators for basic operations, such as times tables and simple addition, made it harder for the Year 9 student to build fluency in index laws ("less use of calculator and a more thorough understanding and memorisation of times tables…").

In Year 11 Chemistry, incomplete memorization of polyatomic ions led to slower progress during ionic equation tasks.

For a Year 5 lesson, one student jumped quickly to answers without fully writing out working or reflecting on key phrases from questions, which meant missed details when reading texts.

During a senior selective-style test, another student struggled with time management and needed extra practice under timed conditions—she finished late and felt frustrated.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Daceyville recently noticed a Year 10 student who, after struggling with algebra, began working through examples independently and now occasionally solves problems without prompting.

In another session, a Year 9 student showed new initiative by finishing a research task on her own, whereas before she needed frequent reminders to stay on track.

Meanwhile, one of the younger students has started reading out loud more confidently during comprehension activities and now actively eliminates incorrect answers instead of guessing.

Last week, a high schooler completed her science report on time for the first time this term.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Lionel Bowen Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Michael's Catholic Primary School.
