Every child is unique, so he/she has to be dealt with and moulded accordingly. The greatest thing in my eyes that a tutor can do for a student is listening to the student requirements as to what or where he/she needs special attention, or what he is grabbing or not. The greatest asset to this is communication, a student can only open his/her heart…

The most important things that a tutor can do for a student are to increase their confidence in the subject, provide a solid base of understanding rather than just rote learning, try and dispel existing doubts and encourage a sense of discovery. I am an empathetic person and can relate to children feeling lost in some aspects of their learning.…

The most important things that a tutor can do for a student is to allow their minds to create their own version of knowledge rather than just gaining a pre-existing idea. It's only when we challenge the students to think out of the box that they actually start realising the importance of what was in the box. Giving them a vivid imagination can be a…

The most important thing for me would be patience - to ensure that you allow your student/s time to try and follow what is being taught, and to be understanding of different strengths/levels the student is at. I believe if I understand a concept really well (difficult or not), then I am able to explain it in a way that makes sense to a wide range…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to be their personal cheerleader. It’s about more than just teaching content; it’s about showing up for them, celebrating their progress, and creating an environment…

To individualise teachings tailored to the needs of a given student. I think the most important things a tutor can do for a student are to make the material understandable and relatable, build their confidence, and create a supportive environment. I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is help students feel safe to try, fail, and grow. Many students come into tutoring thinking they are "just bad at maths," and it's our job as tutors to help break that mindset. There are two most essential things that a tutor should do for a student: motivation and guidance. A student only find a tutor when he finds difficulties in learning a subject and is not confident in taking the exams. Therefore, the first thing that each tutor needs to do is to encourage the students to study and face their own problems.…

Knowledgeable and supportive, patient and great communication skills
Khalida, Doncaster East

Inside Doncaster EastTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Ava practised long division with remainders and explored onomatopoeias to strengthen both numeracy and creative language skills.

For Year 8, Lily worked through textbook review questions in measurement, focusing on applying Pythagoras' theorem to find missing side lengths in right-angled triangles.

Meanwhile, Year 9 student Daniel concentrated on trigonometry by identifying which trigonometric ratio (sine, cosine, or tangent) to use when solving for unknown angles or sides in various problems.

Recent Challenges

In Year 12 Biology, a student avoided making her own notes on cellular respiration, which meant key details (like inputs/outputs) were not fully memorised; as one tutor noted, "she needs to create her own notes to help with memorisation."

Meanwhile, in Year 9 Maths, another student relied heavily on mental calculations for algebra and skipped writing out steps—when mistakes happened, it became difficult to spot where things went wrong.

A Year 7 student sometimes struggled to identify what the question was asking in worded problems and spent extra time working backwards rather than building a clear process first.

Recent Achievements

One Doncaster East tutor noticed a Year 10 student who had previously hesitated to attempt harder algebra questions now works through complex inequalities independently, giving every question a try and getting them right.

In VCE Biology, another high school student who used to rely heavily on hints now confidently explains each stage of photosynthesis without prompting and answers new cellular respiration questions accurately.

Meanwhile, in primary sessions, a younger learner who once mixed up coin values can now count $5 and $10 notes correctly while adding up change, finishing her money exercises with no help needed.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as The Pines Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Donburn Primary School.
