Adapt to their way of learning. Whether this is more theory focus, or if it’s putting it into real life ways so they can physically grasp the context. I can explain a topic in multiple ways until the student finds one that resonates with…

I believe that the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to act as both an academic and emotional mentor to alleviate some of the stress that comes with studying. Naturally, it is expected for tutors to help students with breaking down the content into manageable concepts for the student to understand. However, aspects such as study…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is being prepared. I have had 1-1 Spanish tutoring in the past, and every week my tutor would arrive prepared with documents and interactive lessons, which were fundamental in enriching my learning of the subject and making the sessions more enjoyable. Additionally, the tutor needs to maintain…

Being a remarkable mentor in his/her life. A tutor can be a huge influence in a young student's life. I know this from experience because I had great tutors during high school. I would say the most important things for me as a tutor is to support the students and provide them with past experience in terms of exam strategies and study skills and help them gain confidence in the subject. I will make sure their students fully understand the concepts instead of memorizing them. Maths is one of my academic strength as I have…

The bare minimum a tutor should do is to aid a student in their academic journey, however the optimal result would be for tutors to create an enjoyable learning experience for the student. Specifically in mathematics, I believe I have the creativity to come up with multiple approaches to a certain problem. Thinking outside of the box, I could show…

Building the trust between the tutor and the student is what I believe it is most important. I felt that if I didn't build the trust with my students, then no matter how much I try, they will not improve. Therefore, building trust - looking confident and knowing what I am doing. My strength is making sure the students understand the concepts.…

The most important thing for a tutor to do to a student is to be able to connect with them on a level that allows them to understand the content. Not being able to form a connection with the student makes the learning process tough. It is important to find an approach that enables the student to succeed. As a tutor, I am able to connect with the…

A tutor or at least a teacher is someone who can give students a helping hand, perhaps a friend is too informal but someone they can relate to. I think being able to understand your student and what makes them improve or how they can improve is also essential as a tutor and a teacher. It is useless to spoon feed facts and knowledge to a student if…

The most important thing a tutor can do for their student is analyzing them and figuring out their strengths and aspects where they need support the most. I believe it is extremely important for a tutor to have similar hobbies or experiences to the student so that the student feels comfortable and safe by taking out the power balance many often feel between their tutor or teacher. This also helps as content taught in our sessions will flow better, and create more engagement from the student. Having…

Building a caring relationship in my opinion is the most important thing a tutor can do for any student. It is only that foundation can a tutor be able to deliver his best and at the same time the student will be keen to learn. It is the conducive learning environment that a tutor has to provide to enable the student to work to his/her maximum…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to empower them to become independent learners. I believe that the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to not teach them how to answer a specific question but to ensure they understand the logic behind the answering methodology. Inside DrummoyneTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Jess focused on revising for NAPLAN and tackling end-of-year exam questions, building confidence with key assessment formats.

For Year 8, Jess worked through algebra topics including factorisation—particularly rules involving negatives—and also practised finding areas of circles using formulas distinguishing radius from diameter.

Meanwhile, Year 9 lessons included mastering linear relationships by graphing lines with two intercepts and rearranging equations, as well as extending understanding of trigonometry to include sine, cosine, tangent and their inverse functions through textbook examples.

Recent Challenges

Several process challenges were noted across year levels.

In Year 8 maths, Jess left 7 sheets of homework, which meant she missed out on valuable feedback and practice with ratios.

A Year 9 student repeatedly relied on mental calculation for simpler algebra steps but didn't show working—"even if it is a more simple operation that can be performed in her head"—making it hard to trace sign errors when answers were off.

For a Year 10 topic test, one student forgot to check subtraction signs during simplification, leading to repeated mistakes and extra correction time instead of learning new concepts.

Recent Achievements

A Drummoyne tutor noticed one high school student, Jess, has begun to self-correct minor errors in her algebra and now regularly checks her multi-step working—where she previously skipped over mistakes.

Another older student who struggled with statistics earlier in the term showed clear progress, as seen by recent test results that reflected a solid grasp of key concepts.

Meanwhile, a younger primary student experienced a breakthrough with times tables after weeks of practice and even explained the "EF procedure" back to the tutor for the first time.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Balmain Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Mark's Catholic Primary School.
