A tutor is the main source of wisdom. Textbooks and study materials give us information but a tutor is the one who guides a student in understanding the analytical logic behind the message and gives sufficient instances of its usage. I always believe in teaching concepts with real life examples.I prefer to use the things around me to teach…

From my perspective of view, the most important things I can teach a student are the interests in this subject and finding pleasure from it. If that does not work, I will teach students the train of thought when solving different types of questions, summarise the key points and raise efficiency in their learning. I was raised up in another country…

In order for the tutoring sessions to be efficient, it is essential that a good relationship be established between the tutor and the student. Often, this relationship is created quickly, but at other times, it may take a few sessions before the student opens up. The success of this relationship reveals the personalities of each of them, but it…

Teaching them the curriculum and making them score higher is not alone enough making them realize what they are capable of. Not every student are good with their IQ, their IQ Capacity does not judge what they can do. I think a tutor can inspire the students and teach them the importance of knowledge. I also think the students many a times look up to their teachers as role models. So a tutor should also be a persona that they imitate! And hence it's the duty of the teacher to set a good example in front of their students for them to learn and grow! I can be…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is make learning fun or easy. A student studies because he/she is enjoying it or forced because of responsibility or other circumstances. If you can convince the student that they are enjoying what they are learning and it's actually easy, then they will gain a lot of self-confidence…

Learning is all about association. You cannot go to C without having to go through A and B. I think one of the most important things a tutor can do for a student is to focus on the basics first and only if the basics are clear should the tutor proceed with the new concepts. Individual attention to each student and identifying their individual…

The most important virtue that I consider for being a tutor for a student is having the patience to understand what they are expecting out of me, in order for me to give them back the necessary skills and training they require to excel in their domain. In my opinion, learning and getting good grades are two things that complement each other. Once students have a firm grasp of the knowledge points in the learning phase, then they will have enough confidence to cope with the exam. As a tutor, you need to help students absorb knowledge more easily at the stage of learning knowledge. For example,…

Try to understand what teaching method is effective for a certain type of student because I believe we cannot just apply one particular approach to all kinds of students without adjusting and modifying it to accommodate their personal needs. In addition, be a good listener as well. I have my own approach when it comes to tutoring. The first thing…

Inside East MelbourneTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Alex practised **perimeter and area calculations for rectangles using visual diagrams**, and began exploring volume concepts.

In Year 8, Sophie focused on **solving equations and inequalities**, including a review of quadratic expressions.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student James worked through physics motion questions involving **velocity, displacement, and time calculations**, alongside targeted chemistry exam question reviews to strengthen his understanding of key concepts.

Recent Challenges

A Year 11 student preparing for Units 1 and 2 exam questions struggled with calculations, especially when pressured for time—she missed marks on multi-step problems because units weren't clearly written, noted one tutor.

In Year 8 algebra, skipping the step of flipping inequality signs when multiplying by negatives led to repeated errors that practice alone didn't fix.

A Year 4 student's working was often hard to follow due to inconsistent layout; this made checking answers difficult, especially with area versus perimeter tasks.

For a senior Physics student, not responding fully to feedback meant velocity calculations stayed shaky into the next lesson.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in East Melbourne noticed a big change for one Year 9 student who used to get stuck on fraction problems—she now works through addition, subtraction, and even multiplying fractions with much less hesitation and remembers the steps from week to week.

In a senior session, another student showed initiative by completing several practice exams independently and reported feeling more prepared than before for upcoming assessments.

Meanwhile, a younger student who was previously reluctant to speak up has started asking questions whenever she's unsure about how area and volume differ, instead of quietly guessing.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as East Melbourne Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Richmond West Primary School.
