I believe that tutoring for a student should be a safe zone space where they can make mistakes. Tutoring does not have the same pressue for a student that school can, as such it is important for a tutor to be patient and adaptive when a student is struggling with a concept. A tutor should welcome mistakes as an opportunity to grow. I also believe…

The most important thing a tutor can do isn't just to lead them to the right answers but help them build confidence and self-motivation. As a tutor, I aim to help students develop independence. For me, a successful teacher is someone who can guide students to no longer needing one. I am quick to identify the strengths and weaknesses of students…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to provide them with a reason as to why its important they need to study, other than just getting good grades. I believe if the students can find why they need to learn all the stuff and they see the bigger picture, then it will provide the students with enough internal motivation, which…

To be able to teach the concepts with patience and clarity. A good tutor would be able to inspire the students to develop an interest and enjoy learning Maths. I am able to teach Maths at all levels from grade 5 to grade 12. I can breakdown complicated concepts into simple terms, such as calculus, trigonometry and integration, etc. I am also…

The single most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to be patient. Everyone learns things at different rates and some things may come more easily than others. If the tutor becomes frustrated it only ends up discouraging and demoralising the student which further affects their study and confidence. Hence, it is vital for a tutor to be…

Understand their mind , the problems they are facing and try to sort them in the simplest way possible :) The other important thing is to have a friendly bond with student, so that they can ask questions without hesitation. Understanding a student's need as each student is different , so I opt for different tutoring techniques suitable for a…

Inside Ebbw ValeTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Summer worked on BODMAS, with a focus on how brackets affect calculations, and explored spatial patterns using questions from her maths book.

In Year 8, Jamie practised addition and subtraction of integers and then moved onto more advanced topics like ratios, rates, gradients, and straight line graphs, sometimes using mini-exams for consolidation.

Meanwhile, Year 9 student Sarah tackled index laws as well as finding the highest common factor (HCF) and lowest common multiple (LCM) in number problems.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student often hesitated to check their own algebra answers, instead waiting for confirmation—she still relies on me to tell her if the outcome is right or wrong—which made building independent problem-solving skills slower.

In Year 11, a student struggled to remember all steps for profit/loss calculations; forgetting formulas led to gaps during revision sessions.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 student's tendency to read too quickly meant missing details in comprehension passages and making mistakes at punctuation marks.

One Year 10 learner skipped practicing harder percentage questions, risking weaker recall outside familiar topics. These moments chipped away at confidence during class discussions.

Recent Achievements

One Ebbw Vale tutor noted a Year 10 student who used to freeze up on worded maths problems is now breaking them down independently and selecting the right formula for each step, working with much less prompting than before.

In a recent Year 8 session, a student who'd previously guessed at grammar questions started underlining errors in complex sentences and explaining their choices out loud.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 learner who once hesitated over reading longer words is now tackling new chapters aloud and even catching tricky homophones while reading together.
