I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is foster a student’s confidence and independence in learning. While explaining concepts is important, my goal is to empower students to think critically, ask questions and develop their own problem-solving strategies that work for them. When students begin to trust in their own abilities they…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do is make the student feel supported and understood. Ceating a space where the student feels safe to ask questions and make mistakes is important. A good tutor should listen and adapt their approach based on the student’s needs. Sometimes students already have the ability but they just need someone…

If you ask me, simplifying the concepts is the major task for a tutor. Just not the concepts but individual attention to the weaknesses and elimination of the same is a must to be a good tutor. Simplification of concepts and integration of the concept with real-world problems so that the learner could relate and understand the application of the…

I view the role of a tutor as more of a assistant to the teacher. I main goal for the a tutor is to go in-depth on discussed in the classroom allowing the students to wrap their head around concepts that were once perceived as difficult and challenging. It is the tutors role to teaching correct habits and strategies to tackle difficult or…

In my personal opinion and experience, having an informal connection with the student alongside being their tutor is extremely beneficial as they are able to clearly and more freely express their opinions related to studies and also helps the tutor in gaining insight into their learning styles. One of the most important things a tutor can do for a student is to provide them with the essential building blocks of knowledge before trying to reinforce hard concepts, in order to help the student have a fleshed out understanding of their learning objective and feel confidence in their understandings. I believe that the most important thing that a tutor can do for a student is to allow the student to feel free to ask questions and to query explanations. This way, it allows for me to answer their initial query as well as giving me the opportunity to proactively infer other areas that they may not completely understand. My strengths are centred…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is teach them skills they can use in life. It's not just about teaching them how to do a single problem, it's how to solve problems down the track. It's also about giving them the confidence in themselves, being confident means they will be less stressed and be able to do their best…

In my opinion, one of the most important things a great tutor can do for a student is to increase their passion for the subject. When a student genuinely enjoys learning about a topic, they will be more motivated. When students love what they're learning, it unlocks their potential. That energy and excitement will hopefully lead to a deeper…

Having compassion. Being proficient in a subject does not guarantee that the student will understand as deeply as the tutor. Sometimes, techniques won't work, or the student may have problems outside of academics. Being compassionate will outweigh any other things that a tutor can do at the end of the day. I think stoking an interest in self education/exploration of a subject is more important than helping them simply pass a test (though that is important as well). When a student wants to research a topic on their own time, they not only have found a way to improve, but also might have found a future passion or career choice they never knew they…

I think that being patient and empathetic are two of the most important things a tutor can do for a student. Inside ElsternwickTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Liliane worked on addition and subtraction in money scenarios, along with telling time on an analog clock.

In Year 10, Celia reviewed trigonometry concepts including sin/cos/tan and Pythagoras' theorem using worked examples, then practiced rearranging algebraic equations.

Year 11 student Bonnie focused on logarithmic equations and explored chemistry content involving valence electron shells, breaking down problems step by step.

Recent Challenges

In Year 10 Maths, one student approached rearranging algebraic equations by jumping straight to answers without breaking down steps—"needs to break down the order to solve the problems," a tutor noted—which led to confusion with signs and structure.

Meanwhile, in Year 11 English, another avoided planning essay paragraphs, which made sentence flow inconsistent and transitions awkward during practice essays.

For a Year 2 learner, attention wandered often in multi-step maths tasks, causing key instructions on place value and addition facts to be missed.

In each case, gaps in process or focus left errors unnoticed until review or feedback arrived.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Elsternwick noticed a big shift with Lara (Year 11), who now arrives each week with her own questions, having realised she gets more out of sessions when she pinpoints where she's stuck—something she never did before.

In Year 10 maths, Celia made real strides by not just memorising laws but confidently explaining how to expand and factorise equations on her own, even after struggling with perfect squares last term.

Meanwhile, Nushara (Year 4) finished all her homework on telling the time correctly and read aloud with clear expression during the session.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Elsternwick Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Adass Israel School - Orrong Road Campus.
