Empathy: Understand how the student is feeling or understood a particular concept based on their behavioural and body language cues. This is because most students do not give explicit feedback. Understanding the student's learning pace: Every student is unique and have their own pace of learning. As a tutor you need to adapt to that. I am…

One of the most vital things a tutor should do is ensure that he is understood teaching-wise and that he understands his pupils perfectly. One thing that some teachers don't have is empathy for the unique condition of a student. A student's ability to learn can be affected in various ways, like by his surroundings and so on. It is significantly…

I believe that a good tutor has the the ability to help students build confidence for the classroom, and inspire them to be the best that they can be. Another thing that is important to me is not belittling the student or making them feel "stupid" for not understanding, but instead relating to them and helping them find a different way to solve…

For a tutor, the most important thing is to increase the curiosity of the student, for the subject that they are learning. Exams are important. However, at the end of the day I believe, the knowledge gained through the subject matter is far more important because it is something that can help to shape the future of the student. For example,…

According to me, the most important thing a teacher can do for a student is to provide a friendly and fun loving environment so that the student does not have a load on his head for studies and can learn easily and can understand the concepts clearly. Flexibility and Patience are the two strengths of mine. I adjust myself to the different learning…

Be understanding. We are all part of the learning process, both the student and the tutor. Respect the student and respect the tutor. I like to teach 1-on-1 simply because I can try and personalize the manner in which I teach the student, to help them understand concepts in their own way. Additionally, I believe that I am quite emotionally…

Paying attention on them. A student sometimes have fear and won't ask their doubts. As tutors we must pay attention to them and see what they need. If not the students won't achieve their goals. In school, they teach students based on a certain method that suits a cohort or class of students, which caused some students to lag behind. I find that as a tutor, we need to identify which part is lagging behind, then tackle it together with the student. I am friendly so I could easily build a rapport with my students. I come in understanding…

I consider one of the most important things a tutor can do for a student is build their confidence. Once this is established and the student has faith in their own abilities, the tutor is able to guide and facilitate their learning as a pose to simply instruct. The role of the tutor is to recognise what the student is capable of doing on their own…

Student's improvement. I would like to raise the student's attitude toward the subject by , for example, giving them the applications and examples of the theories. The most important thing a tutor can do for a student beyond simply teaching academic content is ‘build confidence’. The most important thing to keep in mind when tutoring in my opinion is to help them gain confidence & enjoyment in the subject. If a student believes they are bad at a subject, they often won't try as hard because they view it as pointless. Confirmation bias can also lead to only noticing when they make mistakes, meaning they won't recognise the…

Help them to do the best they can, and to enjoy doing it. I believe that they go together, that "learning" which is not enjoyed is often, in the long run, not real learning at all, just hoop jumping. Inside EssendonTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Olivia worked on mean, median, and mode in statistics as well as interpreting and constructing stem-and-leaf plots.

In Year 10, Jack focused on graphing sine and cosine functions along with exploring transformations of trigonometric graphs using sketching techniques.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Mia reviewed derivatives and stationary points before practicing different methods to find maximum and minimum values in calculus contexts.

Recent Challenges

In Year 11 Physics, a student found it challenging to relate work and energy concepts—"developing the intuition to relate work to change in energy" remained a sticking point when applying formulas in new problems.

For Year 12 Maths, time management in multiple-choice sections became an issue; as noted, "extra minutes were lost re-checking easy questions instead of tackling harder ones."

A Year 7 student's written maths work was often messy and confusing: "formatting on the page, he confuses himself," leading to misplaced numbers during algebra steps.

In primary years, one student's frustration with fractions led to moments where motivation dropped and progress stalled mid-lesson.

Recent Achievements

One Essendon tutor noticed a Year 11 student who had been hesitant with trigonometric graph transformations now independently sketches trig functions and solves transformed equations, something he'd previously avoided without guidance.

A Year 8 student who struggled to organise writing has started using a wider range of sentence starters and now structures essays more clearly, no longer repeating the same phrases.

Meanwhile, a younger primary student recently read and entered data into a stem-and-leaf plot on his own for the first time—he even calculated mean, median, and range without prompting.

What they say about our tutoring

quote

At this stage we are very happy. Nick likes Tharaka and his overall attitude to maths has changed. He is quite happy to give things a go. His confidence is building.

Suparna is lovely and very patient and Sitota is very happy with her. I think it will take a good few months before we see any progress with Sitota considering her learning difficulties. All positive and we are moving forward though

Mo is a lovely girl and Ashleigh seems to be benefitting a great deal from her tutoring sessions with her. Ashleigh is fairly motivated and I'm sure by the time exams come around there will be a noticeable difference in her capabilities. Mo and Ashleigh interact quite well and Ashleigh is much more confident about what she is doing after her sessions. All in all, at this stage we couldn't be happier with the way things are going.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Sam Merrifeld (Essendon) Public Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Penleigh & Essendon Grammar School - Essendon Campus.
