As a tutor, it is most important to be patient and kind to the student. I always see myself as a peer of my students, and what I am doing is to help them build confidence in the subjects. I am able to break the complex content into pieces and explain every piece in detail to the students. I am good at engaging with students and responding to their…

Aside from the knowledge that you will share, it is patience, understanding the intellectual capacity of the student as well as their behavior are the things to consider to be a tutor. For me, the two most vital things a tutor can do are to make learning stick and make it last. To make it stick, I focus on practical application. I bridge the gap between textbook theory and the real world, which makes the information tangible and easier to comprehend. To make it last, I focus on building the skills for continuous,…

I believe patience is important as everyone learns and works at a different pace so being able to cope with that is important. Moreover, it is crucial that a tutor is open-minded and non-judgemental as the concept of learning is different for everyone. Further, a tutor should be organized and behave professionally to set out the aura of a good…

Treat each student as an individual person. The same methods of tutoring might not apply on the other. Moreover patience is necessary. Tutors should maintain a pace comfortable for the student. Tutors should be humble enough to admit if they don't know few answers and should be able to research and provide the answers to the student. I learn…

I think that the most important thing that a tutor can do for a student is to be interactive and encourage them to ask more and more questions. This makes the learning experience to be wholesome and complete. My strength as a tutor is that I can clear the basic concepts of students and teach them to approach the problem in a systematic and logical…

Education is one of the most important assets one can possess. I believe that I serve an onus to the youth to teach and share ideas with them. Help them to do the best they can, and to enjoy doing it. I believe that they go together, that "learning" which is not enjoyed is often, in the long run, not real learning at all, just hoop jumping. Being able to formulate different approaches on the go is something a tutor should be able to do in order for the students to understand at their own pace. Local Reviews

All went well with Sharmin and James got a lot from the sessions.
Sharmin, Moonee Ponds

Inside Essendon WestTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Liam worked on decimals with addition and subtraction, using number lines to visualise calculations.

For Year 9, Olivia tackled factorisation of monic quadratics and solved area problems involving algebraic expressions.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Ethan revised trigonometry concepts—focusing on the Cartesian plane—and practised finding equations of lines using real-world examples from past assessments.

Recent Challenges

A Year 10 student relied heavily on a formula sheet for finance problems—when asked to write out the interest formula from context, he paused and searched his notes instead. As one tutor observed, "he goes to his formula sheet for questions that in my opinion can be written... just by knowing how to use maths."

Meanwhile, a Year 8 student struggled with structuring her working out for index laws, leading to confusion during revision.

In Year 12 Physics, slow rearrangement of formulas and mixing up indices often forced extra time spent reworking steps rather than deepening understanding of concepts like relativity.

Recent Achievements

One Essendon West tutor noticed a big shift with a Year 11 student who used to get stuck on physics formula work—now he's confidently picking the right formulas and manipulating them without hesitation.

A Year 10 student recently tackled factorising trinomials in her head and started checking her answers independently, instead of waiting for prompts.

Meanwhile, a younger primary student has gone from guessing at addition to carrying out sums in his head perfectly, showing real focus during sessions.

Last week, Sam handed in an essay that received strong teacher feedback after previously struggling to express his ideas clearly.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Moonee Valley Libraries—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Bernard's College.
