I consider the most important things a biology tutor can do is not just to help the student understand the subject and hand, but also to inspire and motivate the student so they become more passionate about learning and strive to put in their best effort. Learning is so much more than memorising the syllabus and I believe it is important to help…

The most important thing a biology tutor can do is build trust and create a safe space where students feel confident to ask, share, and explore. Once that trust is there, it becomes much easier to guide them, inspire curiosity, and help them believe in themselves. I want the students to be confident and build their self-esteem. My strengths as a…

In my opinion, the first thing a biology tutor can do to help a student is to first listen to them and take their concerns very seriously. It may be a very simple doubt, but the moment they accept that we are ready to listen to their concerns, we automatically grab their attention and build up a rapport with them. Another critical aspect of…

As a biology tutor, I feel the ultimate goal is to benefit the student to become an independent and confident learner. Mostly, students see their tutors as role models, so it’s very important to keep ourselves updated and supportive throughout and be ready to reach out to them academically and as a friend whenever in need. To conclude, having…

Empowering the student is the most important thing I can do as a tutor. It is clear to me that my goal is not for the student to be dependent on me as a tutor. Inside FitzroyTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Gus focused on measurement skills including unit conversions, perimeter, and an introduction to surface area, as well as exploring the angle sum in triangles.

In Year 9, Maryam worked on solving simultaneous equations using substitution and elimination, then applied these methods to practical problems.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Ali reviewed operations with fractions—adding, subtracting, multiplying with different denominators—and extended this knowledge to simplifying algebraic fractional expressions.

Recent Challenges

A Year 6 student in Fitzroy showed difficulty setting out work neatly and consistently dating pages, making it harder to track progress—especially when tackling worded measurement problems.

As one tutor observed, "she struggles to walk through questions speaking out loud," which made it tough to clarify her thinking on fraction conversions and unit changes.

In Year 10 English, a student forgot to submit an essay by the deadline, delaying feedback and causing extra stress before class.

A senior maths student arrived unprepared for sessions without essential materials like a pen or laptop; this slowed the start and limited practice time.

Recent Achievements

One Fitzroy tutor noticed a Year 11 student, Celeste, who used to hesitate with trigonometry word problems now confidently solves bearings and graphing tasks on her own—she even tackles complex questions without prompting.

In another session, Maryam (Year 10) moved from confusion about box plots to clearly explaining five-figure summaries and solving simultaneous equations using both substitution and elimination methods.

Meanwhile, in Year 6 maths, Ella showed a shift from struggling with measurement topics to independently working through area and volume questions, finishing her test section on these without needing hints.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Fitzroy Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Sacred Heart School.
