Patience is the most inevitable element. I think tutor should dedicate the most of their time, even outside of tutoring session, to answer students inquiry. This shows responsibility and how much a tutor care about their students Patience and well-communication skill. I think it’s important to identify what the student is struggling, hence help…

I strongly believe that a good tutor can change the entire perception of the subject for a student. Throughout my life I have been fortunate enough to be in the presence of inspiring teachers because of which I developed a strong liking for my subjects. A good tutor is one who can understand the needs of the student and execute it in the most…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do is make a student feel genuinely safe and unembarrassed about not knowing something. Once that pressure is gone, they’re actually able to think, ask questions, and learn. A good tutor also pays attention to how a student thinks - not just what they get wrong - and adjusts the explanation to fit…

A tutor is very important in providing support outside school. Ensuring that the student finds learning to be fun and interesting, in my opinion, is more important than focusing on higher grades. As a tutor, it is important to cultivate interest in students and create knowledge. I am great at teaching students with learning disabilities and…

Understand their basic understanding of the subject knowledge prior to assigning homework and tasks. Have patience and faith in the student when they themselves maybe demotivated by difficult subject matter. They should try to foster deeper understanding of the subject matter rather than simply asking them to memorise certain technical terms or…

Helping a student gain the confidence that they need is the most important thing a tutor can help with. Not understanding a math problem? A tutor can help with that. Needing motivation to study? A tutor can help with that. I am someone who is very patient. Without a student understanding a certain concept, I wil not move on. Being an outstanding…

Well, one is to build the student's confidence! I want them to be able to think independently and instil in their minds to avoid the use of AI tools like ChatGPT. I want to create a comfortable space where they can make mistakes and learn from them! A good tutor does not just give the answers, and I'd guide them to find the answers themselves. 1:1…

Being really punctual. When a student wants an appointment with a tutor, the tutor should come on time. Not only that, considering the student's perspective is really important. The tutor should be really compassionate to their students and is always there whenever the student needs help. Even though the tutor is busy and tired, a wise tutor…

I think the most important would definitely be creating a connection with the students so that they feel comfortable around the tutor. This helps them love studying and also comfortable in asking doubts to the tutor. I think my biggest strength as a tutor is definitely my patience. I think the most important thing a tutor can do is to provide different of point of views to a student. In my opinion, firstly should form a good relationship with students, because it is important that students are willing to communicate and ask questions, secondly, try to make students being passionate and take the initiative to learn knowledge rather than being force-feeded, and as a tutor, I should not just unilaterally output knowledge, but…

To reiterate, I think personalization is a key facet of good tutoring. Every student is likely to have different needs and learning styles, and it is important to adapt course material and teaching style to best suit their needs, while clarifying concepts effectively and accurately. Also, making the concept/subject appear less daunting and more…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do is make the student feel safe to learn. That means creating a space where they can ask questions, make mistakes, and not feel judged. While a tutor's contracted duty is to assist a student academically, I believe a tutor can do something far more in the process. A tutor can be the reason a student develops a greater sense of purpose at school. A tutor can be the reason a student falls in love with a subject and chooses to pursue it for the rest of their life. All in all, a tutor…

I think it’s the empathy. I believe that no one could know everything at the beginning, even myself. So an empathetic tutor, who knows what their students are experiencing and struggling with, definitely is more inspiring and more able to help students overcome the difficulties. 1)As a tutor it is very important to understand student's personal needs and cater studies according to that. Get to know them, take few counselling sessions as that would help in getting to know students in a broader way. 2)Be Creative-It is very important for a tutor to be creative. Explaining the same topic in different ways makes a lot of…

Inside FitzroyTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Gus focused on measurement skills including unit conversions, perimeter, and an introduction to surface area, as well as exploring the angle sum in triangles.

In Year 9, Maryam worked on solving simultaneous equations using substitution and elimination, then applied these methods to practical problems.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Ali reviewed operations with fractions—adding, subtracting, multiplying with different denominators—and extended this knowledge to simplifying algebraic fractional expressions.

Recent Challenges

A Year 6 student in Fitzroy showed difficulty setting out work neatly and consistently dating pages, making it harder to track progress—especially when tackling worded measurement problems.

As one tutor observed, "she struggles to walk through questions speaking out loud," which made it tough to clarify her thinking on fraction conversions and unit changes.

In Year 10 English, a student forgot to submit an essay by the deadline, delaying feedback and causing extra stress before class.

A senior maths student arrived unprepared for sessions without essential materials like a pen or laptop; this slowed the start and limited practice time.

Recent Achievements

One Fitzroy tutor noticed a Year 11 student, Celeste, who used to hesitate with trigonometry word problems now confidently solves bearings and graphing tasks on her own—she even tackles complex questions without prompting.

In another session, Maryam (Year 10) moved from confusion about box plots to clearly explaining five-figure summaries and solving simultaneous equations using both substitution and elimination methods.

Meanwhile, in Year 6 maths, Ella showed a shift from struggling with measurement topics to independently working through area and volume questions, finishing her test section on these without needing hints.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Fitzroy Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Sacred Heart School.
