To listen to them, I find that they often know best their own struggles, and it can be incredibly valuable to listen to them so that they can feel like they're being heard and helped. This can also help avoid the kids feeling like they are pointlessly covering areas they are already confident in. I have babysat and informally tutored for many…

The most important things that we can do for student is helping them to overcome the topics/subjects that they find hard to understand which eventually they lose passion of that subject. Hence, it is very important for us to assist the students and being patient is very important in this process. It is a tutor job to explain the topic, find out…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do is to provide different of point of views to a student. I realized that the best tutors are not the one that knows the most but the ones that gives the best point of view to a subject to a student. My favourite teacher used to say, study hard but also study smart. A great tutor would form a good…

I believe the most important being a tutor was the ability to express clearly so that students are able to understand the contents being taught clearly while not being felt that they are isolated because they are behind others who could understand from the get go. It is also important to show passion and commitment by checking on each student’s…

I think encouraging the student is the most important thing a tutor can do even more than results as if the student begins to become more inquisitive and enterprising in their own learning they will do better overall. I consider the most thing a tutor can do for a student is personalisation and to instill belief in the students' capability to continue improving and bettering themselves. Be patient. Tutors must always be patient with students as both stand on different levels in education and understanding. Therefore, it is imperative that the tutor is patient in…

Inside FitzroyTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Gus focused on measurement skills including unit conversions, perimeter, and an introduction to surface area, as well as exploring the angle sum in triangles.

In Year 9, Maryam worked on solving simultaneous equations using substitution and elimination, then applied these methods to practical problems.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Ali reviewed operations with fractions—adding, subtracting, multiplying with different denominators—and extended this knowledge to simplifying algebraic fractional expressions.

Recent Challenges

A Year 6 student in Fitzroy showed difficulty setting out work neatly and consistently dating pages, making it harder to track progress—especially when tackling worded measurement problems.

As one tutor observed, "she struggles to walk through questions speaking out loud," which made it tough to clarify her thinking on fraction conversions and unit changes.

In Year 10 English, a student forgot to submit an essay by the deadline, delaying feedback and causing extra stress before class.

A senior maths student arrived unprepared for sessions without essential materials like a pen or laptop; this slowed the start and limited practice time.

Recent Achievements

One Fitzroy tutor noticed a Year 11 student, Celeste, who used to hesitate with trigonometry word problems now confidently solves bearings and graphing tasks on her own—she even tackles complex questions without prompting.

In another session, Maryam (Year 10) moved from confusion about box plots to clearly explaining five-figure summaries and solving simultaneous equations using both substitution and elimination methods.

Meanwhile, in Year 6 maths, Ella showed a shift from struggling with measurement topics to independently working through area and volume questions, finishing her test section on these without needing hints.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Fitzroy Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Sacred Heart School.
