I believe the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to instill confidence in them and encourage them to be determined. As a student myself, I understand feeling defeated but a good mentor will assure the student that it is okay to not comprehend things and to lean on them when they feel poor. I believe I am articulate. I explain…

Personally, I believe the most important things a tutor can do is being fully aware of the student's experience so that the tutor can adapt their own teaching styles and interactions in order to best support the student. This not only contributes to the process of learning content, but also to the wellbeing of the student under tutelage as…

To be understanding and patient in teaching, giving support when needed like notes, help in homework and emotional support. I had experience with several tutors who didn't treat their students well, so I personally try to avoid that and try to make my class fun and engaging. I think I am a patient tutor who will listen to the student's confusion…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student are to foster a supportive learning environment, personalize instruction to meet individual needs, and empower students to become independent learners. By creating a safe and encouraging atmosphere, a tutor can inspire confidence and motivation in their students. Ultimately, guiding students…

The most important thing a teacher can do for a student is create a genine and authentic relationship. This allows the student to trust the tutor and with trust communication will be very easy. The tutor will be able to recognize the students' strength and weaknesses and work well with them. I recently finished high school and have only just…

I believe one of the most important things a tutor can do is provide support and clarity in areas the student is struggling with. I understand that it can sometimes feel intimidating to ask for help, so I make it a priority to create a safe and understanding environment where students feel comfortable expressing their concerns. Furthermore, for…

Be patient. Tutors must always be patient with students as both stand on different levels in education and understanding. What may have come easily to the tutor may not come so easily for the student. Furthermore, what seems extremely easy to the tutor may be very hard for their student. Therefore, it is imperative that the tutor is patient in…

Being really punctual. When a student wants an appointment with a tutor, the tutor should come on time. Not only that, considering the student's perspective is really important. The tutor should be really compassionate to their students and is always there whenever the student needs help. Even though the tutor is busy and tired, a wise tutor…

The most important thing a tutor can do is to understand the student. If a student is not performing well, the tutor should not be harsh towards him/her, instead they should try to talk to them and understand what issues they are facing. A tutor can come up with personalised study plans for students who struggle to keep up with the class. All I am…

Tutors should not immediately give students what they want. Providing answers is the easy path for both tutors and students, but then the solutions will always be mine, not the student's. I am not going to simply give them fish; I will teach them how to fish. I have varied experience, not just in, not only in the education sector but also in a…

I consider listening and adapting two very important skills that a tutor can apply during a session. Tutors are supposed to listen to the students, their needs, what they do not understand, what they do understand, and how they can understand it better. Therefore, we have to adapt the class according to what we see. I am a very optimistic person…

To inspire them, to teach them, to help them and to be a role model. We can have fun during activities and do serious work when we should. It is through the Tutor that the student will probably choose his field for his career, so the Tutor has to be really encouraging. I consider it important that tutors to personalise learning experiences for student. Every student has different approaches to learning and given that tutors have more flexibility to work with students outside their classroom, it's important that tutors account for students' various learning needs. For example, providing diagrams for students who…

The tutor can assist students with especific exercises or topics, but the most important thing a tutor can do is to assist students in developing their own potential. The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is, by far, giving him the confidence that he/she is capable of learning anything they want in school. Without that confidence, it's not possible to move on and that's the first thing the tutor must help the student with. Secondly, after some confidence was acquired, the tutor must help the…

In my point of view, a good tutor should be a good listener to students. The tutor should able to fix the student's queries. The qualities like patient, flexible, openness and active are important things for a tutor because the student will observe the tutor and we may influence them at some point. so, it is essential for a tutor to have good…

Inside FitzroyTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Gus focused on measurement skills including unit conversions, perimeter, and an introduction to surface area, as well as exploring the angle sum in triangles.

In Year 9, Maryam worked on solving simultaneous equations using substitution and elimination, then applied these methods to practical problems.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Ali reviewed operations with fractions—adding, subtracting, multiplying with different denominators—and extended this knowledge to simplifying algebraic fractional expressions.

Recent Challenges

A Year 6 student in Fitzroy showed difficulty setting out work neatly and consistently dating pages, making it harder to track progress—especially when tackling worded measurement problems.

As one tutor observed, "she struggles to walk through questions speaking out loud," which made it tough to clarify her thinking on fraction conversions and unit changes.

In Year 10 English, a student forgot to submit an essay by the deadline, delaying feedback and causing extra stress before class.

A senior maths student arrived unprepared for sessions without essential materials like a pen or laptop; this slowed the start and limited practice time.

Recent Achievements

One Fitzroy tutor noticed a Year 11 student, Celeste, who used to hesitate with trigonometry word problems now confidently solves bearings and graphing tasks on her own—she even tackles complex questions without prompting.

In another session, Maryam (Year 10) moved from confusion about box plots to clearly explaining five-figure summaries and solving simultaneous equations using both substitution and elimination methods.

Meanwhile, in Year 6 maths, Ella showed a shift from struggling with measurement topics to independently working through area and volume questions, finishing her test section on these without needing hints.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Fitzroy Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Sacred Heart School.
