I think the most important thing is to guide them to find their own methods to solve problems and help them build up strategies. As a result, they can recognise different modules and use appropriate methods. I am approachable and I can guide students to the answers instead of providing them answers directly. I love helping others with their…

A tutor should be able to help a student where ever they struggle. A tutor needs to have full knowledge of what the student requires, what they already know, and the best approach in guiding them. If there is no progress in their performance, then clearly the tutor might not be teaching or guiding them in the right way, in which case they should…

One of the important things a tutor should do is to convey the concepts in the most simplified manner with examples and practical usage, as students are usually more motivated to study a topic when they know its importance in the practical world, which is not always easy to see in maths. The other crucial thing is that a tutor should be friendly…

It is important to provide encouragement and positive reinforcement. A kind word can easily lift their spirits and encourage them to push through despite the obstacles and struggles. It is essential to assist the students in developing good study habits and boost their self-esteem. I believe that not all students learn at the same pace and some…

To attentively listen to the student (their stories, worries, and struggles), to identify areas that the student need more work on, trying different learning approaches, to be able to break down large problems into smaller easily managed tasks, and to share our life and study skills with them where relevant. As a tutor, I believe I am very…

Giving the student the tools and forming the basis to improve themselves is crucial. I think forming the student's understanding for answering any sort of question whether it be in English or Maths is necessary for achieving marks that most students cannot gain. While for maths a lot of the questions are based around simply using a formula,…

Supporting the student and building their confidence is very important, as the belief that you are capable and have a strong grasp of the material is essential to success. I will also take the time to communicate with the student to develop a study plan that is suited to their level and leans on their strengths. My strengths are in English,…

The first and foremost thing a tutor can do for a student is to understand where the student is lacking behind or where is the student going wrong. Secondly, the tutor needs to build a good rapport with his student which will build the students trust and confidence which will help the tutor to communicate better with his student. Based on my experience, I would love to help my students to find out the most appropriate study method for them. As I was in secondary school, science subjects were not my preferable subjects at all. The most important thing, according to me, is that the tutor is able to sympathise with the student. More often, in a class full of people, a student can feel like they're the only one who's falling behind. A tutor can help the student get out of that sort of thinking, and personally, at a one-on-one level, be involved in helping the student out…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student would be to help them understand the concpet in their own way, I would make sure the student finds the path by themselves. Very happy with the way it is going thanks Gene. Benedict is a good tutor and Saf and I are both happy with her progress.
Rankin, Fitzroy North

Inside Fitzroy NorthTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Alex worked on calculating percentage increases and decreases as well as reviewing measurement test questions to strengthen understanding.

In Year 9, Favour focused on solving simultaneous equations and applying linear graphs to word problems using real-life scenarios.

Meanwhile, Queen, also in Year 9, practised translating worded questions into linear equations and revising methods for finding gradients and graphing lines.

Recent Challenges

A Year 9 student often avoided showing working in algebra, which led to missed sign errors and made it hard to trace mistakes—"he tried to solve in his head instead of using paper," a tutor noted.

In Year 11, one student left homework incomplete due to a busy week; as a result, they struggled to apply new concepts confidently in class.

Meanwhile, a Year 7 learner hesitated to ask for clarification when confused by fractions or ratios, leading to gaps that slowed progress in financial maths topics. The reluctance to vocalize reasoning during problem-solving also limited feedback opportunities.

Recent Achievements

One Fitzroy North tutor recently noticed Alannah begin assigning her own revision tasks before assessments and working independently—previously she'd needed more direction during sessions.

In another case, Moses in Year 7 has shifted from quietly struggling with statistics to now asking for clarification when stuck and finishing whole sets of descriptive statistics questions on his own by the end of the lesson.

For a younger student, Leon's reluctance toward long division faded after he saw he could do it easily; now he works through multi-digit multiplication and division confidently without hesitation.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as North Fitzroy Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Fitzroy North Primary School.
