Become a role model and help inspire them to become the best version of themselves. I want to be someone who can help them expand their horizon for learning. And understand that maths and science isn't their enemy. Studying isn't their enemy. I feel what's most important is being an educator not a grader. Patience, and repetition, never…

As a math and physics tutor, motivating students to do more practice questions is the best thing I can do for them. The more they understand concepts, the better they link them and apply them in difficult questions requiring analysis. My legacy for students is for them to feel inclined in doing more and more questions, it is from there a passion…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to truly understand them. This involves recognizing their individual learning styles, strengths, weaknesses, and personal interests. By understanding students on a deeper level, I can tailor their approach to meet each students unique needs and make learning more engaging and…

I think one of the most important things that a tutor can do for a student is to instil confidence within them. I believe confidence is the key for all students across any level to be able to achieve their desired study outcomes. Without the belief that they have the skills and resources to succeed in any aspect they desire, students can be left…

Unlike a school teacher, we can build closer relationships with students, which allows us to know students' learning styles and helps us in making more individualized learning plans for students. From my experience, I realised that I can adapt my teaching style according to the needs of the individual student. This definitely helps improve the…

In my perspective, the most important role of a tutor is to foster a deep understanding of the subject matter while nurturing a positive attitude towards learning. Building a strong foundation and instilling confidence in students are vital. Beyond that, effective communication and the ability to create a supportive learning environment are…

A tutor should first of all help the student to build his self-confidence and self-esteem. Appreciating small efforts and hard work of the student will allow him to be more confident and continue working in that direction. This will help him not only academically but also in later stages of life where he will learn the importance of perseverance…

Forging a want to learn. Learning to read and write shouldn't be a chore; it's what makes people human. A tutor can say they've done a good job if the student chooses to work on their skills and improving themselves even out of lessons. Empathy and openness. Everyone is different and has different things that matter to them. Learning more about…

To help them become confident and self-sufficient in the subject! I work to fill the gaps in knowledge that often hold students back from achieving all they are capable of. I know what it's like to struggle with maths in high school and so relate to students who may be less confident. My approach is to break exercises down into little parts,…

The most important thing tutoring did for me was providing a deeper understanding of complicated topics that were hard to grasp. It is also important to be someone that the student feels comfortable coming to with help. So by showing understanding and appreciation for their effort, a student doesn't feel concerned for getting an answer wrong of…

I think the most important goal as a tutor is to create a positive environment for a student. Being patient, understanding and maintaining a positive attitude has a wide array of benefits, including learning. Tutors should try their best to inculcate a certain level of intrinsic motivation in their students, rather than having students work just because the teacher or tutor says so. This increases the chances of consistent work and improvement while also increasing the level of enjoyment while working. It is also important to help them gain an…

Make them feel comfortable with you so they interact with you during the class as high interactive classes makes the subject more interesting and students tend to start liking the subject as well thereby spending more time with the subject. The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is giving enough time for the student who requires that time for understanding. Also, my strength is a tutor is my…

Very happy with the way it is going thanks Gene. Benedict is a good tutor and Saf and I are both happy with her progress.
Rankin, Fitzroy North

Inside Fitzroy NorthTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Alex worked on calculating percentage increases and decreases as well as reviewing measurement test questions to strengthen understanding.

In Year 9, Favour focused on solving simultaneous equations and applying linear graphs to word problems using real-life scenarios.

Meanwhile, Queen, also in Year 9, practised translating worded questions into linear equations and revising methods for finding gradients and graphing lines.

Recent Challenges

A Year 9 student often avoided showing working in algebra, which led to missed sign errors and made it hard to trace mistakes—"he tried to solve in his head instead of using paper," a tutor noted.

In Year 11, one student left homework incomplete due to a busy week; as a result, they struggled to apply new concepts confidently in class.

Meanwhile, a Year 7 learner hesitated to ask for clarification when confused by fractions or ratios, leading to gaps that slowed progress in financial maths topics. The reluctance to vocalize reasoning during problem-solving also limited feedback opportunities.

Recent Achievements

One Fitzroy North tutor recently noticed Alannah begin assigning her own revision tasks before assessments and working independently—previously she'd needed more direction during sessions.

In another case, Moses in Year 7 has shifted from quietly struggling with statistics to now asking for clarification when stuck and finishing whole sets of descriptive statistics questions on his own by the end of the lesson.

For a younger student, Leon's reluctance toward long division faded after he saw he could do it easily; now he works through multi-digit multiplication and division confidently without hesitation.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as North Fitzroy Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Fitzroy North Primary School.
