The most important thing is for a tutor to be patient and approachable so students feel comfortable around them. If students are comfortable they will ask questions and improve faster. Being open and empathetic creates a much better relationship and experience for both the student and tutor. Note: I am currently living in New Zealand and will…

The most important thing that a tutor can do for a student isn't to remove the obstacles that hold them back, but to convince them that they can remove them themselves. I am good at adapting how I explain things. One of my issues with many of my teachers was that they would only teach their material in one way, the issue of teaching a whole class…

Not give up on them. Understand that every student is different and change up teaching method to suit their different IQs to help them do the best they can. Be a good role model to the student, so they respect you and want to work harder every time I believe I am able to explain difficult concepts by breaking down and simplifying it to the…

I think the most important thing is to guide them to find their own methods to solve problems and help them build up strategies. As a result, they can recognise different modules and use appropriate methods. I am approachable and I can guide students to the answers instead of providing them answers directly. Along with making class fun, I will ensure to boost their confidence in their subject. My strengths are that I am a…

A tutor must be able to secure a positive impression of the subject in the student's mind, regardless of how arduous the subject content might be. A tutor is a third parent and must have immense patience to ensure that the child grasps each and every detail, even if they ask us to repeat what we taught. Besides, as tutors, we must always advocate…

The most important thing a tutor can do is build trust and create a safe space where students feel confident to ask, share, and explore. I think the most important steps are, making sure the student has understood, even if you have to re-explain the concept an n number of times or in a multiple different ways, and providing support whenever the student needs it. A tutor should be knowledgeable to be able to address all concerns of a student and check when unable to immediately answer a query. Additionally a tutor should be easy to talk to, allowing for untrained conversations between student and tutor. Finally, a tutor should be able to motivate their students, ridding them of the disbelief that they…

To provide support in a one on one fashion is extremely valuable. Having extra tools and strategies to tackle questions can only increase ones confidence, which is to say, a tutor can provide what is not always provided in the classroom. It is ultimately this process of developing more confidence and independence in learning that is crucial to…

Inside FlemingtonTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Alice worked on calculating mean, median, mode, and range in statistics as well as identifying angles with symmetry using visual examples.

In Year 9, Bita practised solving linear equations and worked through a worksheet on mean, median and mode provided by her teacher.

For Year 10, Laura focused on revising algebra and graphing techniques from the Year 11 curriculum to strengthen her foundation for upcoming studies.

Recent Challenges

A Year 11 student preparing for a statistics test hesitated to share which probability topics felt hardest, making it difficult to target weak spots; her notebook was also missing dates, so tracking progress became confusing.

In Year 9 algebra, as one tutor put it, "he skipped showing steps in simplification, which hid sign errors"—extra time was then spent hunting mistakes instead of building confidence.

A Year 7 student left homework incomplete before lessons and struggled with organizing exercise books and teacher feedback requests.

During Year 12 revision, reluctance to attempt unfamiliar graph questions led to gaps ahead of the upcoming test.

Recent Achievements

One Flemington tutor noticed a big change in a Year 11 student who used to freeze up on tough algebra questions—now, after working through some challenging Further Maths problems, he confidently explained his reasoning and tackled even the trickiest ones without hesitation.

In another session, a Year 9 student who'd struggled to distinguish between explanatory and response variables was able to clearly verbalise his thought process and correctly identify each one during practice.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 student who once guessed at answers now talks through her multiplication steps out loud and checks her work before moving on.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Flemington Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Kensington Community High School.
