I wish to try my best to identify gaps in learning and provide tailored instruction to the students who are struggling. There are always methods to intuitively understand the principle behind the "problems" so that students can make connections with what they've learned. I'm a current student at the University of Melbourne majoring in Mathematics…

Tutors fill a different role than teachers and parents, and that puts them in a unique position to support students. A successful tutors build strong, personal relationships with their students. When tutors focus on goal setting, creating benchmarks and planning backwards, this sets students up for academic progress. When a tutor listens and…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to be there with them, really listening and understanding. When we connect on a personal level and show genuine interest, it sparks their curiosity and makes them want to learn more. As a tutor, my goal is to light that fire within them, to make them excited about the subject and eager to…

A tutor has a duty to help a student the best they can, regardless of the circumstances. If the tutor displays any sort of discriminating bias towards one student's ability to learn, then why continue to tutor? I think my core strength would be my patient yet meticulous tutoring style. I try my best to guide students by going through content…

Make the topic enjoyable. The amount of times my mind has wandered off in lectures cause of how the lecturers just spew information and not engage with the students. This showed me that tutors need to explain things in a way that is engaging. Different students need different methods, some like visualising the question so I draw the question out…

I think the most important thing is to understand the student's cognitive ability and be able to relate to their world. Giving them examples using whatever they're into, for example, cartoons/video games, in order to teach a concept goes a long way. There isn't a bible when it comes to teaching, it's an evolving process, which gets better over…

Empathy: Understand how the student is feeling or understood a particular concept based on their behavioural and body language cues. This is because most students do not give explicit feedback. Understanding the student's learning pace: Every student is unique and have their own pace of learning. As a tutor you need to adapt to that. I am…

The first point is to care about the psychology of the students and to acknowledge their efforts and dedication in a timely manner. When encountering problems, counsellors should remain patient and attentive, guiding students to think about difficult points and broadening their ideas. The second point is to identify the student's weaknesses…

I think the most important steps are, making sure the student has understood, even if you have to re-explain the concept an n number of times or in a multiple different ways, and providing support whenever the student needs it. I hate tutors that charge for help given outside of their class times, or those who specifically arrange for short…

To be consoling and confident, so that the student believes in you. To have a very good relationship with the student is an important key because it releases the stress on the student-tutor barrier, which is important especially during learning. Additionally, to motivate the student in achieving intellectual barriers. I am a people person as i am…

The most crucial aspect of tutoring, in my view, is fostering a positive and supportive learning environment. A tutor should inspire confidence in students, encourage questions, and provide clear explanations tailored to individual learning styles. Beyond imparting subject knowledge, a tutor should instill a passion for the subject, helping…

The most important thing of a tutor is the ability to impart knowledge in a suitable, correct and effective way to the students. Secondly, I have high patience and am…

The first thing a tutor can and should do for a student is to understand their difficulties and to set up a learning plan that is personalized and helpful. Lessons should give plenty of opportunities for students to test their knowledge as well as focusing on any grey areas by explaining any difficult concepts again. The second thing and perhaps…

Inside FootscrayTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Mia focused on solving problems involving the volume of cylinders and explored area and circumference of circles, using diagrams to reinforce understanding.

In Year 8, Liam practiced linear relationships by plotting equations on coordinate grids and worked through questions on finding equations of lines.

Meanwhile, Year 6 student Ava reviewed angle types—such as complementary and supplementary angles—and estimated degrees using protractors for hands-on learning.

Recent Challenges

In Year 7 trigonometry, a student hesitated to attempt challenging problems, focusing mainly on familiar examples—this limited exposure to multi-step scenarios.

For a Year 3 multiplication task, over-reliance on counting rather than recalling tables slowed progress and led to errors ("Need to learn by heart the multiplication table").

In Year 10 data evaluation, incomplete practice with interpreting graphs meant patterns were sometimes missed.

During Year 8 decimal work, one tutor noted: "Need to be more careful while counting the number to put the decimal point and index number." These process gaps often left some questions unanswered or concepts only partly grasped in-session.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Footscray noticed a big shift with one high school student who, after struggling to estimate angles without tools, now confidently judges them by eye and checks his work independently.

Another Year 9 student who used to hesitate when stuck on problems has started raising questions mid-session and fixing mistakes right away, instead of waiting for hints.

Meanwhile, a younger student finally cleared up confusion about range and median—after weeks of guessing, he now explains the difference out loud before solving each problem.

Last week, one finished all his homework in just 20 minutes and asked for extra exercises.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Footscray Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Footscray High School - Barkly Campus.
