I think the most important things a tutor can do are to create a supportive environment, encourage curiosity, and build the student’s confidence in their own abilities. A tutor should not just provide answers, but also guide the student in developing problem-solving skills and independent thinking, so they can succeed beyond the tutoring…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to promote confidence in a student. After a tutoring session, the goal should not be for a student to be able to complete their homework. Instead, the student should gain an understanding of the topic such that they can complete future coursework without the help of a tutor. If that…

I consider the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to encourage and empower them. I believe most students can learn most subjects/tasks but it's just about finding the way of learning that works for them. I am positive and encouraging. I believe a student can learn anything if they are engaged in the subject matter and they have…

Think to pass the belief that the student can achieve the goal. It is just the matter of working hard and maybe trying different approach. And also not comparing yourself to other students, because everyone is unique. I, myself, was in a situation where I had very low marks in Math and Science subjects, but I worked hard and I saw my brain change…

I believe the most important thing a tutor/teacher can do for their students is to help them discover their true potential, eradicate doubt and hone their abilities in what may otherwise seem an impossible task. As a tutor, I believe I can help my students overcome any challenge they face in their studies, by teaching concepts in a way that they…

The clever tutor can know whether the student understands the information or not. He should get that without waiting for the student to tell him. As a result, he should redeliver the information but in a new way. I usually link between the theory and its application. I am interested in finding new interactive tutoring strategies. I try to deliver…

I find that most students are capable of understanding and learning difficult topics but a limited belief in their abilities prevents them from performing to their best ability. I believe it is extremely important for a tutor to have similar hobbies or experiences to the student so that the student feels comfortable and safe by taking out the power balance many often feel between their tutor or teacher. This also helps as content taught in our sessions will flow better, and create more engagement from the student. Having…

I think that taking the time to really understand the student's needs and being able to break down the problem into its smallest components really helps to understand exactly where the student is going wrong, and how to help them. Once I understand where the student is struggling, I can focus on practicing that concept until they are comfortable…

I think an important thing for a tutor is to not tell the student the answer but help them learn how to achieve the answer themselves. Incorporating coaching into tutoring allows the student to learn how to do it independently when the tutor is not around. Give the students the right studying tools (like time management or exam preparation for example). I believe that a tutor should not just provide answers to a problem, the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is teach them how to think to solve problems. This is why teaching maths or physics should go beyond drilling procedures, formulas and theorems into a student's head - tutors should encourage students to develop a wholesome…

Inside GlebeTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Chloe focused on solving algebraic equations by finding the value of x and practiced simplifying expressions, as well as working through percentage problems such as increasing or decreasing values and calculating GST.

In Year 9, Liam worked on ratios and rates with practical examples and was introduced to basic factorisation skills.

For a younger learner in Year 5, Emma strengthened her understanding of area calculations alongside strategies for division using visual models.

Recent Challenges

A Year 9 student missed a scheduled Zoom lesson, meaning they lost out on targeted feedback just before a key trigonometry assessment.

For one Year 11, "notes were disorganised and it was difficult to find the formulas for cosine rule when revising," which slowed down practice and led to confusion in test conditions.

In Year 8, errors in homework weren't reviewed, so similar mistakes kept appearing with ratios and percentages.

Meanwhile, a Year 6 learner's times tables practice focused only on familiar numbers—new patterns were avoided if they felt uncertain or slow, causing hesitation when solving multi-step word problems under time pressure.

Recent Achievements

One Glebe tutor noticed a Year 10 student who previously hesitated to show working now carefully explains each algebraic step aloud, especially when evaluating tricky fractions.

Another high schooler began the term making frequent errors with quadratic equations but recently completed an entire worksheet without needing hints—self-correcting two mistakes along the way.

For a younger learner in Year 4, times tables had been a real challenge, yet last session he jumped straight into practice questions and got nearly all of them right without prompting or counting on fingers.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Glebe Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St James Catholic Primary School.
