The most important thing as a tutor is to help students connect to what they are learning. It is the job of the tutor to differentiate instruction based on the learning preferences of the students. Further, a tutor reinforces what the students have been learning at school. I am a teacher with 15 years of teaching experience. My last school was…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to understand their point of view. From my experience as a student, I struggled with issues inside and outside the classroom, and some teachers just stacked on the workload with no recognition of how much it wasn't helping. It was my ancient teacher who helped me enjoy studying as he…

Be supportive and believe in them wholeheartedly but at the same time not spoon feed them and sugar coat the level they are at. A tutor could help the student reach his or her goal. Help them gain the required knowledge through various tasks. And also not to be too judgmental and see that every student has his or her different capabilities in reaching…

Build up a connection with the student. This is really important because students generally tend to listen to teachers who work according to their preferences. Once we have the connection with the students, then the teaching job will be easy. I believe the techniques that a tutor uses to teach their students is crucial and every student is not the…

Working at the students' pace, and incorporating their learning styles is one of the most important things a tutor can do. The one thing more than anything that a tutor can do is to offer a safe place where students will not be afraid of failure. The most important things are to be gentle and to guide the student in a caring way. Listen when the student speaks and take any feedback on board. Inside GranvilleTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 3 student Ayaan worked through addition and multiplication basics, then explored simple fractions using number lines.

For Year 10, Zara revised linear graphing by finding x- and y-intercepts from equations, while also practicing algebraic equations with a focus on rearranging terms.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Daniel tackled physics concepts around distance vs. time graphs and applied kinematics formulas to real-world problems.

Recent Challenges

Homework completion was a recurring issue, especially in Year 7 and above—"homework!" appeared repeatedly for students working on algebra, factorising, and trigonometry.

One senior student forgot to bring a quiz home for review, despite reminders to write notes as prompts.

In Year 11 Physics, not having a reference sheet meant key formulas were missed during practice.

A Year 9 student avoided reviewing test mistakes; "will need to look through his test to see where he's made mistakes," the tutor noted. Without this reflection, misconceptions in indices and signs persisted into new material, compounding frustration after each assessment.

Recent Achievements

A Granville tutor noticed a big shift with one Year 9 student who used to avoid seeking help; this week, he spoke up about confusion, leading to fewer mistakes.

Another high schooler, in Year 11 physics, had struggled to recall what topics needed extra revision but now arrived at tutoring sessions ready with a list of questions and even brought home his quiz for review—something he'd never remembered before.

Meanwhile, a younger student who previously relied on finger counting completed all their times tables unaided this session and finished the set in under two minutes.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Granville Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Muslim Girls Grammar School.
