Teach them how to think for themselves and how to be critical of any situation so that they may find answers on their own. Teach them that values are more important than success in life. Educate them to be all-rounders. Give them hope, encourage them and not allow failure to bring them down lest they may falter into the wrong path. I was…

I believe the most important things a tutor can do for a student are to provide a supportive learning environment, to help the student understand the material, and to encourage the student to ask questions. I believe being able to provide a dependable and welcoming support system for a student is one of the most important things a tutor should do. Based on personal experience, I struggled with finding and being willing to approach teachers at school for help and support with studies. However, it was because I was able to turn to my tutors, who I…

According to me two most important principles in a tutor are patience and trust. Building trust makes the student feel comfortable enough to ask questions, make mistakes. Having patience also goes a long way in building that trust, so that the student can actually enjoy the learning process. I believe I can bring value to the role through my…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is awaken curiosity and interest in the student. With no urge to ask questions and absorb knowledge, learning would become a challenging task for both the teacher and the student. My strengths as a tutor come from my ability to empathise and understand my students. Possessing a bachelor's…

I think the most important thing that a tutor can do is to provide individualised instruction, as well as a safe and non-judgemental learning environment to student, something that they may not be able to obtain in a normal big-size class with limited time to teach an increasingly information-heavy curriculum. I have been tutoring students…

A tutor should have a great deal of empathy to be able to understand what the student is going through in order to understand why they are experiencing difficulties to help them solve a problem. Being active when students are in need the most, answering questions as students ask them. It is important to ensure the student feels completely fine to express themselves and ask tutors any questions they may have, during and after the lesson. A tutor should be attentive and ensure the student has no questions before progressing further. I feel…

Students are often scared of certain subjects and avoid facing their problems. For a tutor to be successful at his/her job, they need to be able to help the child overcome those fears and enjoy the subject they were once afraid of. Tutoring can be very challenging sometimes. As tutors, the most important thing they can offer a student is the opportunity to improve their learning. Private tutoring differs from classes and group tutoring because tutors can efficiently find out the areas that the student struggles with the most and deal with the problem effectively. One of the most important things about being a tutor is…

In my opinion, the best thing a tutor can do for a student is to acknowledge the students intelligence. Einstein said it best himself "Everyone is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid." And now we are learning more and more that there are multiple teaching styles…

I consider the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is create a space that they feel comfortable to be challenged and to learn in. It’s one thing to just help with answering questions but to encourage and motivate students to take on the difficult concepts even when they're working on their own, this is crucial and shows growth.…

Inside GranvilleTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 3 student Ayaan worked through addition and multiplication basics, then explored simple fractions using number lines.

For Year 10, Zara revised linear graphing by finding x- and y-intercepts from equations, while also practicing algebraic equations with a focus on rearranging terms.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Daniel tackled physics concepts around distance vs. time graphs and applied kinematics formulas to real-world problems.

Recent Challenges

Homework completion was a recurring issue, especially in Year 7 and above—"homework!" appeared repeatedly for students working on algebra, factorising, and trigonometry.

One senior student forgot to bring a quiz home for review, despite reminders to write notes as prompts.

In Year 11 Physics, not having a reference sheet meant key formulas were missed during practice.

A Year 9 student avoided reviewing test mistakes; "will need to look through his test to see where he's made mistakes," the tutor noted. Without this reflection, misconceptions in indices and signs persisted into new material, compounding frustration after each assessment.

Recent Achievements

A Granville tutor noticed a big shift with one Year 9 student who used to avoid seeking help; this week, he spoke up about confusion, leading to fewer mistakes.

Another high schooler, in Year 11 physics, had struggled to recall what topics needed extra revision but now arrived at tutoring sessions ready with a list of questions and even brought home his quiz for review—something he'd never remembered before.

Meanwhile, a younger student who previously relied on finger counting completed all their times tables unaided this session and finished the set in under two minutes.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Granville Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Muslim Girls Grammar School.
