I think that students generally need a lot of support, and that a tutor should be able to provide an avenue through which a student is able to feel comfortable, supported and encouraged. I think that I’m good at connecting with students and building a relationship. I am a very enthusiastic person and I believe that lends itself to creating an…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is ensure the tutor works towards the students strengths and attempts to minimise their weaknesses. Tutors should also be considerate to their student by considering their needs and how they like to learn so that their student's highest potential is achieved. I believe I am patient, flexible,…

I think students should enjoy their learning and improving rather than just do it for the sake of it, so I like to bring passion to my lessons and make them actually want to learn and improve. I am passionate, kind, and patient, as I take the time to allow my students to fully understand the content. I also try to explain concepts in more than one…

I think there are a couple of important things a tutor can do for their student. The first is being a patient person who is going to push them to do the best they can, not rush them through their work. The second is being someone the student feels comfortable making mistakes in front of as mistakes are one of the most important parts to learning.…

Be patient with them. Prepare, no matter how good you are at a topic you must always prepare for your lessons. Understand the topic you are teaching. If you can't answer a student's question, they will lose faith in your ability. Believe in your students! I was a hopeless student at one point and I believe my comeback from one is my…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is to try be on the wavelength as their student, as this will help them better learn concepts better if you are both on the same page. I believe my strengths as a tutor comes from the ability to engage in their learning from the very beginning of a lesson and try to understand their weaknesses and…

The most important thing a tutor can do is to practice empathy in order to ensure the student knows they're in a safe environment where they are allowed to make mistakes and learn from them. Being kind and really listening to what they say to you is also essential, as you don't want them to feel like they can't talk to you, as this will result in…

A tutor or at least a teacher is someone who can give students a helping hand, perhaps a friend is too informal but someone they can relate to. I think being able to understand your student and what makes them improve or how they can improve is also essential as a tutor and a teacher. It is useless to spoon feed facts and knowledge to a student if…

It is crucial a tutor creates a comfortable space for students to ask questions and express concerns. This is because tutors must understand their students problems and thus solve them. Tutors must also maintain a student's confidence as this can enhance their attitude towards studying and therefore drive the importance of school and hard work.…

A tutor has to be understanding and respectful to the student that they are teaching, they need to realise that these individuals don't have the same level of knowledge as them at the time, so they need time to learn and understand difficult concepts and that require more explanation. The key is to build a strong healthy and friendly relationship…

Melissa Williamson, Gymea

Inside GymeaTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Talia worked through simplifying algebraic fractions and practiced changing the subject of equations, using step-by-step substitution.

In Year 10, Adam tackled sketching reciprocal and cubic functions as well as exploring transformations in the number plane with guided examples.

Meanwhile, Year 12 student Alex focused on calculus by practicing differentiation from first principles and applying short methods to a range of function types.

Recent Challenges

During a recent Year 7 session, a student arrived without their book, requiring the tutor to provide extra materials and adjust the lesson flow.

In Year 11 Maths, one student worked quickly but "missed transferring signs or numbers," which led to calculation errors that were only caught during review.

Another Year 12 Physics student struggled to organize written work when tackling multi-step problems; this made it harder to spot where misunderstandings occurred.

A lack of regular homework completion was also noted in several cases—one Year 9 learner was given tasks for follow-up after not bringing finished practice questions.

Recent Achievements

One Gymea tutor noticed a Year 10 student who used to lose marks for sign errors now double-checks her answers without prompting, after specific feedback on number accuracy.

In a recent high school session, another student who hesitated to tackle challenge questions in trigonometry began independently attempting the tougher problems and showed real persistence before asking for help.

A primary-aged learner, previously reluctant to review her own work, has started going back through completed maths exercises to catch and fix mistakes on her own initiative—last lesson she found and corrected two calculation slips herself.

What they say about our tutoring

quote

Again, I would just like to say Justin's work with Connor was amazing. In such a short period of time Connor has managed to gain confidence in maths from his time spent with Justin. We are so grateful that your organisation matched the tutor and the nature of the student perfectly. Funny as it may sound, maths is no longer Connor's nemesis. Ezy Maths is fortunate to have such a patient and understanding tutor as Justin, we wish him every success for the future.

We have been really happy with tutor and your service and have already recommended you to other parents. Thanks for your help and we will contact you agaIn if we ever need any  more help...:)

Just got Tahli's report. She got 55/100 last report and now 73/100 with position of 2/62 in her year. I have thanked Vashika for her work with Tahli and sorry to lose her next year but thanks to Ezy maths for giving my child confidence in maths!

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Miranda Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Gymea Technology High School.
