The most important things a tutor can do for a student are assisting them with their studies and provide comfort. I do not think tutors should spoon-feed answers to students as that will not help them fully understand and learn. Other than that, I believe the ability to comfort and reassure students is extremely important for tutors. I have met…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to provide them with the tools to be able to confidently work through academic problems on their own. In an English context this can mean teaching a student how to deconstruct what is required by a question, or giving them the skills to analyse a text for thematic and technical…

Get the student to take a real interest in the subject. This can be done by using quizzes, games etc, to make the topics fun and interesting. I have used this technique on many occasions. I believe that the most important thing that a tutor can do for a student is to allow the student to feel free to ask questions and to query explanations. This way, it allows for me to answer their initial query as well as giving me the opportunity to proactively infer other areas that they may not completely understand. My strengths are centred…

Throughout my academic life my teachers and tutors and their passion for learning has sparked my own. Through this experience, I have realised that a tutor must be truly passionate about the subject that they are teaching and care for the students and their future as if it was their own. I believe striking a balance in how the tutor interacts with a student is key. Being able to listen and identify a student's problem areas, as well as being firm enough to hold their attention is vital. A good tutor can set expectations tailored to a student's abilities and with them raise them while boosting their confidence. Overall personality…

The most important thing in tutoring in my opinion is to understand your audiences and customise your approach based on that. in order to be an effective tutor, someone needs to connect to their students. Some are introverted while others are extroverted. They come with different backgrounds, confidence level, and mental abilities. In the end, a…

I believe a tutor should always be able to accommodate to the students' circumstances when helping them learn something new. Many tutors are often high-scoring students, while many students will be those struggling. This leads to some tutors not being considerate enough of the students' lack of prior knowledge and understanding. It is the tutor's…

1. Convey to the student that if they are finding a subject hard, it is natural. They just haven't found a way that works for them and we are willing to explore that 2. Inside HawthornTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Emily worked on fraction operations and consolidating her multiplication tables, using hands-on practice for both.

In Year 10, Matt focused on embedding quotes effectively in English essays about 'The Golden Age' and practiced planning analytical responses to prompts using graphic organisers.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Sam tackled quadratic equations by completing the square and applied the elimination method to solve simultaneous equations, also revisiting basic trigonometry concepts like SOH CAH TOA.

Recent Challenges

A Year 9 student showed inconsistent completion of assigned homework for English SAC revision, which limited the depth of written feedback and skill consolidation; as a tutor noted, "Matt needs to improve completing his assigned homework tasks."

In VCE English, reliance on brief plans rather than detailed mindmaps or highlighting led to weaker essay introductions and difficulty embedding evidence.

Meanwhile, a Year 7 maths student struggled with structuring working in fraction questions—"more practice is needed on fractions," the notes recorded—which slowed progress and sometimes hid small calculation errors.

Missed homework meant extra class time spent reviewing old ground instead of advancing skills.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Hawthorn noticed that Matt, a Year 11 English student, now completes all assigned homework ahead of lessons and brings thoughtful ideas to each session. He's even started using planning tables and flash cards on his own, which wasn't the case before.

In senior maths, Will has become much more independent with graphing linear relations; he used to need step-by-step support but recently translated equations into graphs without prompting.

Meanwhile, Ziggy (Year 8) showed a big shift by reading scenes from a play aloud with expression and then volunteering his interpretation of the characters' motives.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as City of Boroondara Library Service—or at your child's school (with permission), like Hawthorn West Primary School.
