I believe critical thinking is the most important skill that a tutor can bring to a student, since I think the responsibility of a tutor is to lead and motivate a student to complete their school tasks by themselves, rather than depending on help from a tutor. A tutor should also provide adequate solutions for different students. As I believe…

In my view the most important contribution of a tutor is helping her student do well academically as well as in personal and professional life. It is not just about the concepts but also their practical implications and applications. In my view I have always been a good teacher to my students. Lucky enough to make a difference in their lives. My…

Understanding each and every student is essential as all students don't operate on the same frequency. According to me even though tutoring is taught in class of numerous students, it is more of a one is to one relationship rather than one is to n. Hence, Understanding students and diagnosing them accordingly, with regard to their individual…

The biggest things a tutor can do for a student are to really get how each person learns and adapt their teaching to match. This makes learning enjoyable and effective for the student. I engage with and understand my students completely, enabling me to discover an easy approach for them to grasp concepts while finding enjoyment in the process. I…

The most important thing a tutor can do is make the student feel seen, supported, and capable. That means creating a safe space to make mistakes, ask questions, and grow. A good tutor doesn't just deliver content, they adapt to each student's pace, learning style, and confidence level. Ultimately, it's about building the student's self-belief and…

The most important thing would probably be being able to form an understanding of how the student learns, and then being able to adjust lessons according to that. I think also just being patient for that student to have that light bulb moment, and then commending them when they do. In addition, just holding myself somewhat accountable for the…

I feel the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to make them patient, let them know that it is okay to make mistakes and encourage them to continue to learn and practice in order to master a skill. A can-do attitude is the most important thing a tutor can teach. I myself used to learn concepts in a way that were not theoretical but…

The most important thing that a tutor can do for a student is tailor their teaching to the individual. Outside of a large class of students it becomes easier to change a lesson to suit a particular student, spending more time on a point when a student is struggling with it and ensuring that a topic is perfectly understood before moving on. I think…

The most important thing is to keep calm and listen to them. As a tutor you can never lose your calm irrespective of how many times your student makes the same mistake. You might have to repeat yourself hundreds of times, but that shouldn't be a problem. It is important to understand their questions and respond to them accordingly. It is also…

Each student has a unique way of thinking, understanding and implementing. The most important thing a tutor can do is to understand how their students minds work, adapt to their way of thinking and understanding, and conceptualize theory for beneficial implementation. The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is help them realise the small learning mistakes commonly made that in my opinion are not useful further in life. Namely, learning my heart or just memorising to blurt out a concept without understanding its core only to score good grades. A Tutor should be able to make the student understand…

It is one thing to help someone get the correct answer, but it is another thing to change student’s outlook. A positive and confident outlook will increase engagement, which means that the student is more likely to start having success even when the tutor is not present. This is my most important task as a tutor, because it builds independence…

Inside HighettTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Liam worked on algebra basics and worded questions, using step-by-step examples to strengthen his problem-solving approach.

For Year 10, Jasmine practised expanding and factorising quadratic expressions and revisited linear equations through homework review.

Meanwhile, in VCE Physics (Year 12), Alex prepared for SAC 1 by applying key concepts from motion and forces, focusing on calculations relevant to assessment requirements.

Recent Challenges

For a Year 10 student, he needs to improve his answer layout—how he writes answers on paper, as one tutor observed; unclear working made reviewing linear equations much harder.

In Year 11 Science, missing key notes and not summarizing lessons left gaps before assessments.

One Year 8 student relied on quick mental shortcuts in algebra but skipped writing steps, leading to lost marks when sign errors appeared.

A Year 4 learner often forgot their maths book at home, so practice with time-telling was inconsistent—confidence dipped each time progress stalled mid-task.

Recent Achievements

One Highett tutor noticed a Year 10 student who used to skip over worded maths problems now taking the time to highlight key details and draw diagrams before solving, which led him to finish several expansion and factorisation questions without any errors.

In another session, a Year 9 student who was hesitant about trigonometry started identifying patterns in angle problems on his own and applied rules from previous lessons with much more independence.

Meanwhile, a younger primary student made a clear leap by remembering both o'clock and half-past positions when telling time and even corrected herself mid-task when counting by fives.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Highett Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Moorabbin Primary School.
