This involves providing encouragement, positive reinforcement, and constructive feedback to help students recognize their strengths and overcome challenges. I consider the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is create a space that they feel comfortable to be challenged and to learn in. It’s one thing to just help with answering questions but to encourage and motivate students to take on the difficult concepts even when they're working on their own, this is crucial and shows growth.…

The most important thing a tutor can do for their student is to let them learn on their own. I think the best tutors know how to balance their student's learning pace by guiding them only when they have to. This helps the student learn on their own, and, as a result, learn more efficiently. My strength as a tutor is how I communicate concepts. I…

I believe it's important for tutors to ensure that their students see them as a not only in a 'teacher' role, but someone they could look to advice if they ever feel the need - like a role model, or a mentor. Tutors should help their students gain confidence in their ability to achieve their goals, and by establishing small, achievable milestones…

Inside Homebush WestTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Rishika worked through questions on perimeter and place value, and also practised the four operations with algebra.

Year 8 student Alex focused on data representation—using frequency distribution tables—and calculating mean, median, range, mode, and identifying outliers.

For a senior high school student, Michael tackled calculus topics such as finding gradients of curves using differentiation from first principles and applying the chain rule to solve rates of change problems.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student rushed through their school homework, which led to avoidable errors in two-step equations with negatives—"so many common mistakes that he can easily avoid," as noted by the tutor.

In Year 11 Maths, one student's written work on completing the square was difficult to follow; skipping clear layout made it harder to spot and correct missteps.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 student sometimes squeezed calculations together when multiplying two-digit numbers, making her working confusing and leading to mixed-up addition and multiplication steps.

When organization or presentation slips, even strong understanding doesn't always shine through in assessments.

Recent Achievements

One Homebush West tutor noted a high school student who had previously hesitated to ask for help is now openly working through tough algebra questions together, especially tackling two-step equations that were once a stumbling block.

Another win came from an older student mastering differentiation shortcuts and applying them to find gradients—something that took multiple sessions of patient practice.

Meanwhile, in primary years, Rishika used to need reminders about place value but this week completed all her perimeter and addition tasks independently, showing new self-assurance by checking her own answers before moving on.

What they say about our tutoring

quote

Yes everything has started off great. Lachie really likes Suzan which has made it much easier and seems to be looking forward to Sunday tutoring. Thanks you very much on the email, much appreciated.

We started yesterday and Dylan and Erin both seemed happy and got along quite nicely.

Boris is great, Amy has relaxed a bit since the first night. She seems to be going well, and she was very happy with herself as last night they covered year 8 maths which made her feel clever!

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Strathfield Council Library Service—or at your child's school (with permission), like Homebush West Public School.
