Ensuring they understand in their own way and being able to recognise when the student does not understand. If the tutor can recognise when the student does not understand, instead of moving on and the student now has a gap in their fundamental knowledge, the tutor can attempt to convey the knowledge in a style more suited to the student. I have a…

One of the best qualities of a maths tutor is to create a personal connection to your student. While tutoring classes in the past, I would encompass fun activities within the lesson in order to build an easy rapport with students in the beginning, making the student feel at ease, and comfortable, putting the student in a position in which he or…

I think there are two things a maths tutor can do for a student. 1. Give a confidence in the subject and it will improve his/her confidence as a whole. 2. Make them comfortable by knowing there is someone who can teach questions. I can make a child sitting with me concentrate on math for a while. And I can explain from the very basic where they…

The most crucial thing a maths tutor can do for a student, in my opinion, is to foster an atmosphere in which they feel free to ask for assistance without the fear of judgement. Being patient and analytical are two of my talents as a tutor. This qualifies as a skill since it will put the children I will be tutoring at ease, making them more…

A tutor should meet the student on their level, and aim together for a higher but attainable goal, using realistic and actionable steps to reach it. I believe I'm openminded, relatable and strong when it comes to 1 on 1 teaching, tutoring, supporting and communicating. I have experience in teaching and working with children from various different…

The most important thing to consider as a maths tutor to the student is that they require tutor because they don't understand the topic . As a tutor we need to have the patience and discuss as detailed as we can the process or the values of the topic. We should also explain in easiest form the topic-how to solve it and relate it something in our…

I think the most important thing a maths tutor can do for a student is to build confidence by patiently guiding and supporting them. Oftentimes students underperform because they doubt their ability. Helping them realise their protentional and capabilities is an empowering thing and can have a lasting impact as they achieve their academic goals.…

Listening and being patient. Just because something makes sense to you doesn't mean it is easy for the student. Letting the student explain where they are struggling and really listening to them can help the tutor to better understand their problem. Being patient is crucial as learning always takes time and its our job to ensure the student isn't…

A tutor needs to teach a student, obviously. But more importantly, a maths tutor needs to empower a student. To make them break through barriers they wouldn’t have thought were possible, to achieve their potential, plus a little more. Tutors should also be more personalised, not so just a second teacher. Tutors should recognise why this…

I believe to explain a concept that the student can understand is paramount in the role of a tutor. For this to be done the student needs to comprehend the simple skills that leads up to the final difficult concept. If a tutor is able to explain this complex concept by explaining the simple skills and breaking down the concept in a simpler method,…

One of the most important things a tutor can do for a student is to guide the student in a practical way rather than sticking to the theory. And it is important…

To me, the single most important thing a tutor can do is to be reliable. Showing up on time, ready to teach, ready to answer questions. Inside IlukaTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 3 student CJ worked on decimal addition and subtraction, including real-world money problems, and practised ordering decimals to build confidence with place value.

For Year 5, Farrah focused on persuasive writing structure as well as editing for grammar in her drafts.

Meanwhile, Year 8 student Channing tackled algebraic fractions—simplifying and performing operations—and revised scientific notation using worked examples to consolidate understanding.

Recent Challenges

A Year 4 student with strong math intuition often forgot key steps in converting improper fractions during revision, as she momentarily forgot how to convert an improper fraction into a mixed number.

In English for Year 5, messy written work and skipped re-reading led to missing basic punctuation like full stops or commas—mistakes she recognized only after they were pointed out.

Meanwhile, a Year 7 student hesitated to start narrative writing due to self-doubt, causing delays and incomplete paragraphs.

In each case, avoiding regular review or double-checking left gaps that resurfaced under pressure or in unfamiliar tasks.

Recent Achievements

One Iluka tutor noticed a Year 9 student, Channing, who used to hand in his writing without checking, is now in the habit of reviewing his work for errors and actively uses process-of-elimination strategies during NAPLAN-style questions—something he rarely did before.

Meanwhile, Farrah (Year 10) has gone from hesitating at the start of narrative writing tasks to drafting introductions quickly and using her own checklist to add descriptive language and similes, making her stories more engaging.

A younger student recently started explaining decimal place values out loud after previously struggling to remember tenths and hundredths.

What they say about our tutoring

quote

Very happy with Jason's tutelage.  Anna understands him and they work well together. Thanks for the connection!

Holly enjoyed her lessons with Jennifer as she was VERY patient and simplified the tasks, so that Holly could gain a better concept of the task at hand.

Thomas got 83% in each of his 2 Maths exams in the last week, (he went from 97 % to 50 % which made us think of tutoring) but for me its not the mark , it's the fact that he is happy and confident and really looking forward to his tutor time. It has done such a lot for his confidence Big thanks to Gabrielle!

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Joondalup Public Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Francis Jordan Catholic School.
