The most important things that a tutor can do for a student is to never judge their knowledge, instead its important to approach teaching from a place of understanding so that the student feels validated in their learning. I believe the most important things a tutor can do for a student are to build their confidence, make learning feel approachable, and help them develop a genuine understanding, not just memorise answers. A good tutor listens, is patient, and creates an environment where the student feels safe to ask questions and make mistakes. It's also important…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to understand their individual learning method and cater their lessons to suit. There must be a strong communication bond between both parties, otherwise the student will not enjoy the full benefits of the tutorial lesson. I believe the most important things a tutor can do for a student is to make sure they feel comfortable in the learning environment, and that they are actually learning and benefitting from tutoring classes, by performing well. Also, to make sure that the student knows that the tutor cares for them and wants to see them reach their goals and…

An important thing would be to instil a sense of confidence in a student about a particular subject, theory, or whatever it is that they are struggling with. Without confidence, even if a student may know the content or understand the theory, it can be difficult to do well in that subject. This is achieved by repeating a concept or practising it a…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do is build not only a survey-able understanding of the topic, but hopefully a genuine interest and passion. This might not be realistic 100% of the time, but creating actual curiosity and interest beyond just completing work out of necessity can not only be highly rewarding for the student but will…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to build their confidence. It's not just about helping them get the right answers, but about making them feel capable and supported in their learning journey. When a student believes in themselves, they’re more likely to stay motivated, take initiative, and keep improving—even…

A tutor apart from offering services of tutorship has a huge impact a student's life in the following ways: 1. Encourage students to apply his/her independent mind and motivate them to think out of the box. 2. Go out of the way in exploring different options to teach the same course/study material. 3. Be available for your students and…

A tutor is someone who can help to support and strengthen students' self-efficacy one-on-one. This is extremely important as classroom teachers have to manage multiple students in a classroom and cannot provide the same undivided attention as a tutor can. Tutors instil confidence in their students, assist them in unpacking and understanding areas…

A tutor is a role model and a figure for their students and it plays an important role to know them well. As a teacher role, it is important to remember being flexible, kind, gentle, and patience towards the child that we are teaching. Therefore, a child can get connected with the tutor and they learn at a faster rate. My biggest strength is that…

Anthony, Balwyn North

Inside Ivanhoe EastTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Mitch worked on planning and editing a creative writing short story, focusing on making his writing style more engaging and refining tense and characterisation.

For Year 11 Chemistry, Lucy reviewed types of chemical bonds—covalent, ionic, hydrogen—and practised identifying polarity in molecules.

Meanwhile, Year 12 English student Sam analysed persuasive techniques in VCAA argument analysis exams, comparing tone and arguments across sample articles and practising structured essay plans using CCCTAP methods.

Recent Challenges

A Year 9 student did not complete a short story over the break, meaning lesson time was spent planning instead of giving feedback on writing.

In VCE English, one student had difficulty drawing out meaning in terms of film techniques for 'On the Waterfront,' and hesitated to share ideas despite good insights.

A Year 8 maths student sometimes jumped to conclusions before reading questions carefully—this led to avoidable errors when interpreting worded problems.

Meanwhile, a primary student left assigned homework unfinished and struggled to recall times tables quickly during practice, making it harder to keep up with new content in sessions.

Recent Achievements

During one Ivanhoe East tutoring session, a Year 10 student shifted from waiting for hints to tackling analysis questions independently. This showed new persistence in breaking down film themes before asking for help.

In VCE English, another student who previously hesitated to use evidence began actively selecting and justifying quotes in essays without tutor prompts.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 learner who once made frequent "silly mistakes" on times tables started working more neatly and self-checking answers out loud, recently scoring full marks on her 3s and 4s.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Ivanhoe Library & Cultural Hub—or at your child's school (with permission), like Ivanhoe East Primary School-Wilfred Road Campus.
